I actually have two very annoying problems with my 9312. The first problem is the fan. It will take spells where it will come on and run 2 seconds max, and then go off and it will do this consistently for over an hour sometimes. It does it at random too. I can have Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator all open at once and it won't make a sound but then at times, like when I am creating a 56k spreadsheet in Excel or something silly like that, it will do it until I reboot. When the fan runs weird as described, I can usually count on all icons in my start menu and on my quick launch bar to be gone too.
The second problem is random as well. On occasion, when opening programs, I have to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to unfreeze the opening of the program. I don't have to do anything beyond C+A+D though.
This machine has been doing all of the above since I bought it. It's clear of all viruses & I keep the spyware, adware & malware off.
This is my second 9312. The first one shot a video card less than 4 hours out of the box!
Anyone have these issues before?

Are you running the latest BIOS update? I remember reading that some of the earlier P105-S9312 models had a fan problem like you described and it had been corrected in later BIOS updates.

I have v2.20 6/20/2006
I will have to look and see if there are more recent updates.
Thanks -
Yeah, I'm almost positive there is a newer BIOS, 2.40 or something. I think the one you have was known for that problem you described. Definitely might be worth the BIOS upgrade. You can download them from the Toshiba support site (you just go there and select your model and go to the Downloads section).

Thanks! IT WORKED.

Well, I thought the problem was fixed but it's doing it again. Both issues are back. Hopefully someone will know how to fix this. It's really annoying to have to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL just to finish typing a line or to start a program. I can almost get use to the aggravation of the fan coming on & going right back off, over & over & over again.

Maybe it really is a question for Toshiba support at this point. Definitely doesn't sound normal to have to do that.
