I just got this laptop and the fan drives me crazy. It is kicking in 3-4 times a minute, stays on in high RPM for less then a second, then goes off.
It happens all the times, even when I surf internet.
I called Toshiba and of course they considered it as a normal operation.
There is setting in the BIOS alowing switching from performance to silent mode. The problem is that the BIOS does not save change for this particular setting. My BIOS is latest version. I went to the store and I played with exactly the same display model. It did the same thing!

Anybody can explain this phenomen to me?
Any ideas of how to control tthis weird fan behavior?

    Thanks alot!

I was just about to pull the trigger on a P105-9337, too.

Is this a typical phenomenon or what?

No one here seems too concerened with your problem.

I'd try posting this in the general forum.

Hmmmmm.......this doesn't sound right to me. I have a predecessor to this model and it saved my settings with no problem. I do however use a Spire Pacific Breeze cooler with it when gaming so the internal fan hardly ever comes on.

I have a Toshiba P105-S9337 (exactly same model except for Windows Vista Home Premium instead of Ultimate). I havent tried but I too have this "burst mode" Toshiba thing. Every minute or so I get a burst of air then my computer is quiet. At first it was annoying but I have already adjusted to it. i'd rather have it burst a few times a minute than having it on all the time. Even when I do some intense (i mean really intense) gaming on all high settings I'm surprised at how quiet this baby runs except for those occasional bursts.

Ok, just tried it. I was able to set my settings to silent or performance and it saved my settings. Of course I changed it back to performance since I'm always playing games on this gaming laptop.

I just got off the phone with Toshiba. It looks like Vista Ultimate overwrites BIOS setting for the thermal mode.
Is there anything inside Vista, I could change to stop it from taking control over the BIOS?

    Thanks

    Ok,
    This works for my P105-s9337.
Go to BIOS , select thermal strategy to Silent instead of Performance.
Donot exit and save. ( It does not work). Instead save first. then exit, then reenter BIOS during boot to verify

Similarily adjust the settings in Control Panel.

    Uninstall MCAfee completely.

Now fan doesnot kicks on. Even I have 3 OS running on side by side

i.i.e Host OS = Vista Home
    Virtual PC

    Guest OS = XP Pro
    Guest OS = Win2k
