I have been reading on here a while trying to figure out my problem and couldn't find anything so I though I would post.
I have a Satellite P105-S6014 with XP Media Center that I purchased almost a year ago. About 10 days ago I was working at home and I left the computer alone for a couple of hours while I was downloading a large file. When I came back the screen saver was not on and it did not go into hibernation. It was 'locked up' meaning that the cursor would not move, ctrl-alt-delete did nothing, etc. The only option that I thought I had was to turn it off and restart it, so I did. When it starting booting it I started it with the last known good configuration, got to the Windows XP screen that has the progress bar at the bottom but the screen is dim, the progress bar doesn't even start to move and that is all it does. If I restart it and choose one of the other options it shows the files while booting and stops at vax347b.sys (ALcohol 120 sys file) and goes no further. I have been able to attach the drive to an external HD enclosure and get my important documents off. I tried using the restore disks and all it does is say 'LOADING RAM IMAGE' with a progress bar at the bottom and then "PLEASE WAIT' then nothing until it shuts off after about 30 minutes. I called a Tech friend and he said that it could be a few things so I tried a formatted and partitioned hard drive that was in the enclosure and the same thing happens, I tried removing one stick of RAM, then the other and it still doesn't boot. A tech at my work said that in addition to some of the things that I tried it could be a mother board. I am not sure what else I need to try or how to attempt diagnosing this problem. Has anyone had a problem similar to this before?
My specs: 1.66 Centrino Duo, Win XP Media Center, 1024 RAM, 160GB HD, No new programs installed at least a week prior. If there is any additional info that you may need just let me know.
TIA,
Scott
