Hi I am new here and would appreciate some help. I installed counter strike source on my p30 and ever since then my computer just shuts off when i am playing and now when ever. When I installed css it advised me to go to ati and update my driver which i tried but it wouldnt let me. I have cleaned the fans, have it raised off my desk, shut down all start up programs. I've noticed that when I am running some programs my cpu is running at 50%. Which causes my p30 to shut down. I also have an A10 which, when running same programs no problems. {nice little computer why i bought this one ). I notice it is very hot . Please help. love my p30.{ until i get the osimo.}verheat:

Welcome to the wonderful world of desktop processors in notebook computers, I had the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504, it had a Pentium III in it and six months after I got it, it started once in a while, and then whenever. There was a lawsuit and Toshiba settled and I learned my lesson, always go with a notebook specific processor, thus I got my M60 with a Pentium M in it. They run much cooler, and thus not so many problems with overheating, my fan hardly ever kicks on full speed. About the only thing that I can recommend is that you take a can of air duster and spray where the fan is and clean that out, and hopefully you have a bunch of dust built up and that will fix it. I haven't heard whether or not this is a common problem, but the only other thing you might look into is a notebook fan cooler.

Thanx Matt I have tried all the above even running a fan near it. I am very suspicous that there was something on counter strike source or sp 2 that is now causing it to over heat. I failed to mention that my a10 which is a year older P4 2.0 512 mb runs the same program with 5 to 10% cpu, also it has never been on the iternet and runs perfectly in alll respects. The p30 use to be even less. But now like I said 50% and higher till it overheats and shuts down. All happened when i installed css, sp2 I am wondering if I should update my ati drivers. Any suggestiion are appreciated.

I am almost certain that there was nothing on your Counter Strike cd, and I don't think that SP2 would do it either. It sounds like a manufacturer defect, but I haven't been keeping up on any overheating issues that other Toshiba users have had, but I know that there was at least one other lawsuit with Toshiba over a manufacturing defect. Maybe look and see if other users are having the same problems, my old laptop didn't overheat at first either, but I think it's just like a timebomb waiting to happen.

I have a P30, and yes mine used to shut-off during an hour or so of intense gaming due to overheat. What you should do is make sure in the "Power Settings" that your processor performance is set to "Auto", Level "3-4" so that it doesnt have to work as hard (and hot) if it doesn't have to. Another thing that i did was make two little "feet" that propped up the backside of my computer to allow better airflow underneath the notebook. I used Lego LOL.. i'll take a picture later on if i have time! But anyways, i haven't overheated ever since.
the thing with the P30, is that both of the fans ventilate through the bottom of the notebook, which means that if you have it on carpet or a bed, or something that really blocks the exaust vents, then yeaaaaa.. you get the point. The Mobility Pentium 4 is a step down from the actual desktop processor, but it can still give out enough heat to roast a marshmellow out the back
edit: and here are the pictures of my intense Lego Building skillz!! haha (mind my shaky-hand):

Hmmm... my power settings were set to high performance. I switched it to the settings that you recommended. I actually drilled holes in my desk where the fans are located. One other quick question Do you think if I installed another 512 mb of ram that, that would help.

well, i have another 512mb of RAM i bought about a month ago, and other than a REALLY NOTICEABLE increase in launching speed and multi-tasking, i really don't think it would help with the heating issue.. since there are 2 sticks running, it may even create more heat.
but loading games like CS:S, WoW and stuff, became a lot faster. -
WOW just finished 4 hours of CSS and no problems . So simple to solve and I would like to thank you gents for your help. Funny how paranoid i am about software when it should of been so obvious. Did a major blow and vacumn and turned down my performance. I also raised my laptop up by using wine corks. Just one little thought I wonder, if having your laptop on an angle if that would affect your burner/hardrive? Shouldnt they be relatively flat. I cut two wine corks in half, then hollowed out a bit so they would fit in the little feet to raise it up by about 1/2 an inch. Thanx again.
-
haha well no problem.. and the cd-rom/harddrive work fine.. im guessing it would be more a problem if it were raised to almost verticle, but otherwise you'll be fine. Now go and score some headshots! haha

I got the p35 and i was wondering what TEMP does it have to get to for the PC to shut down? i use mobile meter....
-
Well, it all depends upon the processor/which model you got. I believe that P4 with HT can take more heat b/c they're newer and have better heat-sinks than their older kin (I think). About the the normal temp: It depends upon the notebook/what you do with it. Take readings from Mobile Meter and find the average temperature.
-
pent 4 ht. 512, and ive been having issues of it just shutting off for no reason
-
Around what temp. does the notebook shut off? I know my old Satellite (see sig. for specs) can take up to 72 degrees centigrade, which is quite a lot. Also, what is your ambient temperature in the room with the notebook?
-
It hasnt shut off when i put mob meter up. Havent had a chance to see. I think it was because of AIM Triton, the new one, that was causing it to shut down. I say this because it started after i installed it, took it out no problem, reinstalled it, probelms again. Perhaps coincidence...but it is very cold here...and the window is open, the computer is generally at 34 C or so. and its lifted so i can get air through the bottom always....dotn know whats up..

I've got a 5105-S607 for several years. There have been two breakdowns. After 1 1/2 years a video failure fixed by warranty, 1 1/2 years later the identical breakdown not under warranty and cost $400 to fix.
On this board was recommended a freeware utility called SpeedFan. It reads internal temps and gives some control of fan speed.
When Toshiba system is controling the fan the machine runs at 150 degrees and fan rarely comes on. If i set the fan to rund continuously the internal temperature is about 95 degrees.
What's the harm of running the fan continuously? That's what i'm doing now. I'd like this machine to keep running until dual processor notebooks are available and affordable. -
Same here - I've had my Satellite's GeForce replaced once - I'm hoping mine can hold me out till Vista/Merom. However, are you reading your temps. in degrees Centigrade or degrees Fahrenheit? Mine hits about 68-70 degrees Centigrade before its fans kick in.
-
yeah, i've been having the same problem on my p30, i've been using jenga blocks to prop it up though, i'll have to try the wine corks. Is there any perminant damage that might be happening when it overheats?
-
I believe that the processor should be fine - its the other parts that you've got to look out for (VCard, HD, RAM, Wireless, MOBO, etc). See if you can get a laptop cooler (there was a review done by corilois a little while back if I recall correctly).

thank people! my P30 has been shutting itself off more frequently and i was actually going to blow the dust out, then read this forum to confirm my suspicions. WOW. we live in the country (dusty) and a ton of dust came out when i blew thru the exhaust. i blew thru the fans as well, back and forth until nothing came out. it immediatly was better. i also propped the back up with 2 wine corks with a "V" cut in them so they stay on the feet. the fan rarely speeds up now. THANK YOU!

hey neal, how would i do the "power settings" for my P30, i tried looking but couldn't find it. Please point it out for me.
thanks
