    Hi all,

I have a Toshiba A205-S5804 and want to upgrade my RAM. I will be switching my Vista to 64bit and installing 4GB.
Question is, do I use PC2-6400 or PC2-5400 RAM, as one is 800Mhz and the second is 667Mhz. After running Intel chip set identifier, it told me I have a 965 express chip set. From what I understand, to get the 800Mhz performance all I need to do is upgrade my processor to an 800Mhz one.

Can anyone help? Are my assumptions correct?

You can drop an 800MHz-FSB C2D in, yes. But I'd recommend to pick the cheapest RAM you can find, as all RAM will always run at most 667MHz. Always. At least for this chipset.

Stick with PC2-5400, the 800mhz FSB is different than the RAM speed....the 965 chipset supports an 800mhz FSB speed, but only a 667 mhz RAM speed.

    Santa rosa doesn't support 800mhz.

There are times when one *can* score a deal on PC2-6400 RAM for less than PC2-5300 RAM.

In a laptop designed specifically for PC2-5300 RAM, PC2-6400 RAM will be automagically downclocked so there's no benefit speedwise, but if one's already getting the RAM on the cheap to begin with...BFD. On the upside, the same PC2-6400 RAM can be pulled and used with a future laptop purchase that does require PC2-6400 RAM. That there's some solace in the form of future-proofing.

As Acorn said, the ram will be automatically downclocked to 667 MHz because the platform doesn't support 800 MHz RAM.
