I just threw together this online petition to get Toshiba to release a BIOS patch for this problem. Who knows how much good it will do, but it's worth a shot. I figure if we keep being loud and annoying them enough the rusty corporate gears will move in our favor. Sign if you're interested and spread the link around.

Th petition is a nice thought, but I think your best way to get a message to Toshiba would be to contact their CS on a regular basis.

No surprise they closed the thread. Toshiba is not a Democracy, why would they provide the resources for spreading bad PR. I'm not saying it's right, but just stating how it is.

I still think calling them on a regular basis, making BBB reports and spreading the word to potential buyers, could force them to make a BIOS update to resolve the issue.

    For example:
If a hoard of owners call once a week (not saying at same time, but just call), there by skimming CS employees from helping other customers, this could create a back log in the CS system; thereby costing money and resources. If Toshiba realizes that the cause is a faction of angry Portege owners, they may release a simple patch.

This solution all depends on how dedicated people are. If they can't get the motivation to go beyond an internet forum, then we already know the answer to whether Toshiba will release a BIO update or not. Corporations are motivated by money; you have to hit them where it hurts.

Good luck and keep up the fight!

Remember the topic on the copper vs AL heat sink fins? Talk of it pretty much all but vanished. Whether it truly affects the R835 to an early death, I don't know, but give it time and once owners start having problems with their notebooks, whether or not it is related, I'm sure it will be brought up again. I guess I will wait for the R900 series and see if Toshiba gets it right. :)

It could be a trace signal quality issue (like the m14x, iirc), where SATA6gbps would simply cause too much signal interference/crosstalk to allow stable 6gbps operation :(

Incase people don't already know, Jim is a PAID employee of Toshiba and a PAID moderator at Toshiba support forums. So he is acting as a representative of Toshiba.

Oh well. It looks like we're pretty much going to get nowhere unless someone with enough know-how is able to create a BIOS hack. I know I'm not really motivated enough to launch a big customer service calling campaign or anything. Bummer.
