    Hi everyone,

I just bought me a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4666 and attempted to downgrade it from Vista to XP.

Now I've slipped the XP disc in and formatted the C drive (NTSC) and when it's almost formatted 100% this the message I'm getting:

Setup is unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged.

Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. Consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documention for more information.

You must select a different partition for Windows XP. To continue.

Now, that I've tried to formatted it won't load XP to continue it's installation.

Please help me. I don't know what to do from here. I know that the hard drive is new because I just bought the laptop today.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thank you!

To use the Diskpart.exe utility to clean the hard disk, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type diskpart, and then click OK.
    2. Type list disk, and then press ENTER. A list of available hard disks is displayed.
    3. Type sel disk number, and then press ENTER. number is the number of the hard disk that you want to clean. The hard disk is now selected.
    4. Type det disk, and then press ENTER. A list of partitions on the hard disk is displayed. Use this information to verify that the correct disk is selected.
    5. Make sure that the disk does not contain required data, type clean all, and then press ENTER to clean the disk. All the partitions and all the data on the disk is permanently removed.
    6. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
    7. Run Windows Vista Setup to perform a clean installation

    Hi Andy,

Thank you so much for your speed response.

Going by your second post. I can't reach there. I've already booted from XP and formatted the C drive. But, from your first post:

    C:\fixmbr

I tried that and I've told the laptop to continue on with a new MBR. And nothing yet. I'm still having the same problem. Please help me.

    Thanks

I just bought the laptop today.
    ---------------------------------
Why dont you just take it back to the store, shouldn't be any problems.
Get another one only this time go slow and dont change anything unless you know exactly what you're doing.

Hi also got this laptop a few weeks ago. However, the few times I have tried to install XP I find there are some problems. The first time that I got all the devices to work but whenever I played audio or video it would pause or stutter for a second which would occure for every 6-14 seconds. The second install the audio/video stutter went away but I would get a pause when doing applications like web browsing or word processing. It seemed to occur after the initial xp install and sp1,2 and video/audio drivers, but I am not sure which driver is causing it. Can somebody list which drivers exactly you use for xp install. Thanks

It could be that some of drivers are wrong. I bought the same machine a couple of months ago and did away with Vista and loaded XP. My has been working with no problems. I found that the Toshiba U.K. has machines identical to those sold in the U.S. with slightly different names. It appears that just about every Toshiba sold there is availible with XP. Download the detailed specs. on the 135-4666 from the Tosbiba U.S. site. Search the UK site till you find the exact match. Then go through the suppport and download pages for that machine and you will find all the proper XP drivers and an instruction file that gives you the exact order they need to be loaded.

I also just bought the Toshiba A135-S4666 today. I intend to install windows XP on it as well. I followed your great advice and went to the UK Toshiba site. I found that the Toshiba model "Satellite L30 (PSL33)" was very similar to my laptop. All the drivers for XP and Vista are provided at this link.
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK

Are these the drivers you used? Specifically for the "Satellite L30 (PSL33)"?

I also found the Vista driver files at the USA Toshiba website. Is it possible to install the Vista drivers for windows XP?
    I found them at:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...BV_EngineID=cccdaddlliekmdhcgfkceghdgngdgmm.0

    Thanks for your help.

It appears that Toshiba has discontinued the specific model I used which was the Satellite Pro
A-100-035 PSAAPE-00U00KEN. Here is the driver download page .

    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK

    Do a search on

    Product Type...Notebooks
    Family...Satellite Pro
    Product Series...Satellite Pro A Series
    Model......Satellite Pro A100 (PSAAP)
    Operating System....Windows XP
    Driver Type...All

I would suggest you print out that page and write down the actual file names on the print out. The file names are hard to equate tothe list on the download page and the instructions file with out doing that. I assume all A135-4666's are equiped the same. Mine uses the Intel graphics and the Atheros wifi so I skipped the other video drivers and the two Intel lan packages. Be sure to get both Atheros pkgs. The Instruction file will tell you the order to install. I did use 2 packages from the Toshiba restore disk. The modem driver and the Java package.

Can you please provide me with the exact error message when you try to install XP? And also check the specs of the HDD. I have a hunch that it could be a S-ATA HDD and that is the reason why you were unable to install the XP.

So when you followed this, did all the devices get installed? Was the video working OK without any mouse freezing and was the audio working smooth without any stuttering? Also, did the atheros WiFi work OK for you?

I myself just bought this unit 7-1-07 I want to to install XP only because I am used to that format. I sure am going to read and reread the posts. I sure hope I can get luckier than some and have no hassles. I have been told by quite a few how this VISTA format has much to be desired

Thanks for posting the link to the UK site and drivers.
I have XP running now...and I am finding only two things that are a little curious.

    1. My system fan fires up every 15 seconds and then stops after 5 seconds. Not the worst thing in the world...just odd.

    2. More concerning...because I would actually use it...is the fact that the brightness functions do not work (Fn+F6 and Fn+F7).

Has anyone noticed the fan acting funny with XP (almost like I did not install the correct system drivers from Intel to control/monitor temp and fan)?
And has anyone installed XP and retained the use of the brightness function keys? (the other FN+ keys seem to work)

    Thanks

hey Rick...did you get your LAN port to work? My XP system sees it, but won't install the port with either of the Intel drivers from the UK site. I am trying to find other options, but so far no dice...if you got yours to work, i'd love to know what drivers you used...

Okay...so I have an update. I used the realtek drivers. but they did not install properly though the "update driver" interface. I had to manually chose to install hardware, select network adapter, tell it i have the disk, browse to the location, select the 2nd option...realtek_blah_fast ethernet.

then it installed. life is almost good.

fan is still funny..brightness still out of control.

Anyone having issues with the CD/DVD drive? Mine won't recognize RW discs, and won't write to any format. Can't seem to find the correct driver. The Device Manager recognizes the drive correctly, but lists a generic driver and can't find a newer one. Any thoughts?

I downloaded a set of the XP drivers, now comes the fun part. I'm new to this, and I sure could use some help.

    Questions........
    1) Do I erase the HDD 1st, then install WinXP before proceeding with the new driver installation?
    2) Someone mentioned instructions for order of driver installation. I couldn't locate any info about order. Is it a necessary step? Or, do I just install the XP drivers in the WinXP Win32 driver folder?
    3) Am I missing something?

    Thanks for your help.

I haven't attempted the XP downgrade yet, but have some questions and an observation:

My fan already does the five second on, fifteen seconds off thing in Vista, so I'm not concerned about it. I think that's controlled by the BIOS anyway, so we can't do much about that and I think it's normal.

Even though the screen brightness can't be controlled by the function keys, can you still adjust it in the "power options" control panel? If it can't, then that is a real bummer. Otherwise, it seems the XP driver problem is sorted out well enough to warrant the changeover. While the stability of Vista seems fairly good, I have trouble sometimes connecting to public WiFi and haven't mastered the "network and sharing center" well enough to make it work properly. And I can't get used to 55 services running when XP uses around 22.

    Myron18,
I presume that you would either do a multiboot installation in its own partition if you want both systems, or a clean install for a solo XP. In the clean install process you will be asked if you want to format the drive, which is what you should do. The driver installation is automatic if you run the installation software, but according to some of the posts some will need some help in locating the driver source. I don't think the order is too important. You should not place any drivers manually into the win32 folders.

OK, got XP installed and got all the devices working (except the screen dimming controls), but could not get the Toshiba Power Saver control panel to work- I just get the message ...Cannot open because you don't have access rights to Toshiba Power Saver- even though I'm logged in as administrator. Also I haven't figured out what some of the other Toshiba Utilities do- and there isn't an explanation on the driver download page. I ended up uninstalling all of them since they're not really that important. I'm wondering if these drivers really are compatible with the A135 series- does anybody know what the motherboard model is used?

Tried to uninstall the non-working XP Toshiba Power Saver, but it aborted because it couldn't locate the uninstallation log file, so I'll have to remove it some other way. There's got to be some compatibility problem with these drivers. And how did somebody decide that the Satellite Pro A-100 was such a good match? The spec sheets are vague at best- same motherboard is the best bet, but they are not listed anywhere I could see.

    Eric,
I'm using XP now, and the only properties shown are: preamble (mine is set to long and short), map registers (256), network address (not used), power save (normal), and scan valid interval (60). Frankly I don't think any of these settings will affect your connection speeds. You might try uninstalling and reinstalling the adapter in the device manager to see if perhaps the driver is damaged.

So far, the only way to control screen brightness seems to be by using the Intel graphics control panel- but I'm not sure if the brightness adjustment in the color correction section actually is changing the intensity of the backlight and thus changing battery drain. Perhaps some kind of power meter software would tell?

    CWOCI,
No, the fan activity remains a mystery, but like I said it seems to act the same as it did with Vista- but it's just a whisper compared to my older laptop. Maybe yours is revving up higher due to more heat? Maybe check the CPU heatsink- it may have picked up some dust or lint.
My XP installation is otherwise pretty stable so far. Sure wish someone would figure out the screen brightness tho- mine seems to be set at some medium level- not really bright enough in daylight.

I just discovered that the F6/F7 screen brightness controls work- but only before XP boots up. I put mine in Bios setup (F2) to set the brightness. Apparently these Function buttons are controlled in the Bios but Windows somehow disables them.

Hi, here are the drivers for the Toshiba Satellite A135-S4666 for a Windows XP install that i have researched and collected. I have uploaded them because as most of you know they are a pain in the a** to find and the Seattle Mafia believe they should profit from withholding or sharing drivers that should be by law free to the public who purchased the hardware (sorry just a little rant there). The upload is split into two parts because the host i use (rapidshare) likes them in 100mb volumes. i have categorized them into two folders (required and optional) i have no fan speed problems whatsoever (try cleaning the fan heatsink), but you will have to adjust brightness during bootup. i have tested all of the required and some optional ones and every one of my devices is installed and working properly. install file order is also included.

hope this helps and enjoy your new unclusterf***ed laptop!
