    Hi,

My Toshiba Satellite 2400 is two years old.

It has become very slow since quite sometime now. Files take time to open(Words, Excel, etc), programs take time to "open" and to "process" as if it's an ancient machine, even the Start > Programs Menu takes time to display the menu items.

I have upgraded it recently to more that 500 MB of RAM. It's 1.6, 30 GB hard disk, etc (The model number tells all about it's configuration).

Just got an Idea of formatting it's original WIN XP OS. I have an extended warranty of two more years. Is it a good idea to format it on my own, will it help? or should I go to the Toshiba Care. If I can do it then how? I have got the back up of all the stuff fearing it's crash.

    Please Help.

    Thanks,

    Chris

It really sounds as if you need to reinstall the Operating System either via a restore CD that Toshiba might have provided or a copy of Win XP that you have. I'm not going to go into the details of how to do this or cautions you should take with backing up current data, there are plenty of sites out there (Google it) that will aid you, but I think you'll find your notebook is back to its old self if you do this.

I agree, a good formatting and reinstall is the great cure-all for computers. Your machine sounds like it should be handling programs and data at decent rate, I have a desktop with similar specs and it works great. If you have not ever formatted or reinstalled in the 2 years that you've had it, then it's just bogged down with crap that accumulated during normal use. You could run utilities like defrag etc., but formatting is the best route to go, faster too.

As for backing up, there are several ways you can do it. I have a dvdrw on a newer desktop (this notebook too) and dvdrw's make great backup discs. Cds work fine too, for less data.
