i just did a clean install of windows 7 home edition 32bit and i noticed the screen would flicker, just a line across the screen whenever i did something (and sometimes when im not doing something).. its really bad now, i tried the toshiba application for windows 7 clean install and it sttill did it, i also tried the nvidia display adaptor from their website and it still did it...

now im sitting here with no display driver and it's not flickering... i dont know what else to do im so frustrated.

if you think you can help me can u please ?? i really need this laptop up and running and i dont know what to do now. :(

Does it flicker even more when you tilt the lid backwards and forwards? If so, your LCD Cable is probably loose or not working properly.

Is yours the model with the 8600M GT's in SLI? That could also be the cause.

no, moving the screen backwards and forwards does not effect anything. i have the 8700mGT.

i went back to vista and everything is okay again, im going to try re-upgrading again however... should i just run the toshiba application for windows7 which updates everything automatically?

When I still had X200, several versions of NVidia drivers had this problem for me.
I had to try several versions from laptopvideo2go until I have finally found one without this occassional flickering.

Just try different driver versions and see which one will not flicker.
Toshiba ones are the good bet, though they are generally quite old.

The 8700mGT has the known faulty G84 core. This could be your problem.
    Just google G84 and G86.

You might have to try the oven trick. Or buy a new GPU.

okay so i used my system recovery disc and fully recovered the system to factory with windows vista home 32-bit and did all the windows updates. i then used the "upgrade" version of windows7 home 32-bit and it is running without any flickering at all. as far as i know, nothing is going wrong.

what i am wondering is if i should use the Toshiba Windows7 Software for upgrading from vista to windows7 on their support website? It says that the program will basically install the necessary drivers/etc for the computer to run the best possible? I just want your guys' opinion, should I run this? I want to because i want the best possible experience from windows7 from my laptop, im just worried that it will start flickering when it's done. I'm not sure what display drivers im using right now (i forgot to check) but I don't want to mess anything up. But I do want the most from windows7 on this laptop.

what do you guys suggest i do?
    thanks.

Could you roll back the video drivers in device manager if you have issues?

well, would a system restore point be just as good prior to running the toshiba software for win7? if it were to start flickering, couldn't i find another display driver from nvidia that gets rid of it? what would you do?

also - will i benefit from using this software from toshiba?

    thank you.

im confused, i was right about to use the toshiba software installer for windows 7. i have the win7 upgrade only and i clicked on "when upgrading from windows vista (not a custom or "clean" install)" ... then when i look at the description of the file before downloading it, it says that its for use only in performing a windows7 custom install ("clean install") on supported models..

then i read the "how to upgrade toshiba laptops to windows 7", the page prior to selecting the software download, and it says " Toshiba recommends using one of the following software tools as part of the windows7 installation process, to support ongoing use of the toshiba provided features and functionality:
    - toshiba upgrade assistant for windows7, for upgrading from vista to windows 7 on laptops made in 2009.
    - toshiba software installer for windows 7, for performing a custom installation of windows 7 ("clean install") on laptops made 2007-2009.

well my computer was purchased in 2007 and im only doing an upgrade from windows vista (not a clean install). so, when simply doing an upgrade to windows7 using an upgrade disc (as i am doing), do i not use this or any program from toshiba support? in other words, i don't need to do anything?

please someone clarify this for me if possible, im a bit confused. thank you!!

I dont think Toshiba upgrade tool will work on X200 properly.
Toshiba Win7 upgrade tool is for fairly recent models only.

Therefore you don't need to bother, especially when things are working Ok for you already.

I haven't read all the posts, just the original. It sounds like a driver issue though, or a loose screen cable.

I had already posted the solution to this problem in the X205 owner's thread..
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5646704&postcount=349

The screen flickers whenever powermizer changes clocks, this happens on 185.xx and above with me..
you can either disable powermizer(google powermizer switch), or use an older driver, i suggest 182.46-Dox optimized(on laptopvideo2go)

if you want to confirm that its the clock speed changing causing the flickering then just install rivatuner and change your gpu clocks, everytime you change clock speeds, the screen will flicker

It happens even without powermizer on some driver versions.

    Hmm, did not know that..
Well for me, it happened on any driver which was 185.xx and above
I suggest using the Forceware 182.46 [DoxOptimized], as this has consistently given me the best performance(w/o screen flicker) out of all driver versions i've tested(upto 195.62)

thanks for the help guys, when i "re-upgraded" to win7 from vista that came with the recovery disc, everything has been working great.

one questtion though -- im looking at the driver im running on for my 8700mGT and it says:
    Driver Date: 8/1/2008
    Driver Version: 7.15.11.7626

I'm just wondering if I should update the driver? I'm not looking for any kind of tweaking or what not (I don't want to be messing with much at all). I simply want the most updated Stock driver. (sorry im kind of new to this stuff) Basically, is this driver the most updated "stock driver" for my laptop? Does it update automatically? Or do i need to do something? I noticed it says 'update driver'...

i just want to make sure i don't screw up and start the flickering again since everything is running fine now. but i do want to be updated if needed. so is this the latest driver for my laptop offered and will it be updated automatically? or do i need to click on update driver? or maybe go to toshiba's website?

i want to be as safe as possible so no problems arise.

thanks again for all your help guys!

btw - is there any specific instructions i should follow if i were to update the driver in any way mentioned above? thx if u could tell me that also.

    :) :)

I have had the same problem on my 8700m GT toshiba x205-9359 for a while. It's finally working well now.

Uninstall all your nvidia drivers and install the latest version of NVIDIA
195.62 for notebooks which was released 12/4/2009.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_195.62_whql.html
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_195.62_whql.html 64 bit version

You might have to install this driver through device manager, and selecting the folder where the drivers were unzipped.

Then run this program nv gpu pro 2.0 build 629 from
    http://nvgpupro.com/ and disable powermizer.

It works for me on Windows 7 (64 bit). Flicker is gone and been very stable. Also, the windows index for graphics went up a bit.

so its all about powermizer huh... i downloaded the newest drivers from the toshiba website for vista/windows 7 for my laptop and as soon as they were installed my laptop started flickering again. luckily i had a restore point right before and went back to 175.11 or whatever and it went away. makes me scared to even mess with any drivers now...

you have to run nv gpu pro and disable the powermizer right away. It's been working very well for my system.

im sttill worried about doing this.. is there anyone running windows 7 home premium 32-bit with the same model as my laptop?

i have 2 questions for anyone that may want to guide me a bit further...

i would like to know what driver to use because it seems like its just a driver issue (and i have horrible luck finding drivers)...? toshiba's didn't work (and thats made for my laptop) - so where do i go next and how do i know it's made for my laptop? (sorry for my computer lack of knowledge with drivers)

also -- if it was powermizer doing it wouldn't it be flickering right now at the stock driver im on with powermizer on?

I've got the exact same laptop X205-S9349 and I've had flicker problems too with the win vista to win 7 upgrade. Followed gigadigit's advice and got the driver for the 32 bit version and downloaded the Nv GPU Pro and turned off the powermizer and I think it has fixed the problem. Thanks gigadigit!
