I have searched everywhere for this problem and have found nothing to resolve it.

I received a portege 3505 from my teacher for a mere $20 because it was donated to him and it had no OS. The computer nerd that I am, I took it in and put Windows XP Pro on it. It worked about a day and then this happened: the screen, when faced towards the keyboard, would not light up at all. You can faintly see the desktop but it is impossible to work with. The thing that I found odd was that when faced the other way, in tablet mode, the screen would work perfectly. I have been searching furiously for days about this but have found nothing.

Since you are getting it to work only in certain positions it sounds like it might be a connection problem. You might try opening it up (the 3500 isn't that hard to get into, I owned one once) and making sure that all of the cables are secured.

    This website might help

    Thanks for the reply TabbedOut,

I have gotten into the laptop and checked the connection several times. It's all secure and nothing is disconnected.

It could be the wiring harness I suppose... You could go on ebay buying parts to narrow down the problem, but I don't know how much you would want to spend on such an old machine. You might be better off selling it or parting it out.
