Toshiba Portégé R700 slides in with a thin design, Core power and an affordable pricetag -- Engadget
Looks like the laptop they advertised a few months ago (don't remember thread title, but I figured a thread with the actual laptop name was appropriate) has been released, even though I cannot find it on their website, despite claims in the video.
There's no mention of the screen resolution, so I am afraid that they don't offer any more than 768 vertical pixels and if that is the case, I still have to consider the Vaio Z12 or perhaps Envy 14 as my only choices =\
No mention of the previously advertised quick-charging battery tech. either, wonder if they threw it out because of heat concerns.
hopefully this link will actually contain a customizable r700 computer soon (only the dock/batteries are there at the time of posting): http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/searchResults.jsp?Ntt=r700

These have matte displays? Wonder how cool these actually run.

looking forward to that

Integrated graphics bleh.

Has anyone used the new intel HD graphics and 8400m GS? If so please tell me anything you noticed, i would really appreciate it. Coming from an m1330 with the nvidia i need something slightly more powerful for everyday 2D and HD work but nothing crazy...benchmarks don't tell the whole story. THANKS
PS resolution is 1368 x 766. No other options available there. -
anyone know how much extra to upgrade to 256GB SSD using Configure to order options? They only have pre-built models as it is.
Also, to the OP, envy 14 is sooo much heavier (63% Heavier!) than this bad boy. But obviously higher spec'ed. Just not worth that much extra weight IMO. Sony is 2x the price.
Sony docking station blows. This one has a perfect docking station with usb 3.0!
This laptop is almost perfect if you ask me. I just wish they got rid of the optical drive and put in a real gfx card with switching capabilities. This thing could be even lighter and better! I can't remember the last time i've seen anyone use a dvd-rom on their laptop. They could have made more $ by making people buy an external dvd drive as well. They have wireless ones now that have their own batteries built in. It would have been a win across the board. -
-
You can find the toshiba site to see whether there is an option for SSD. Even it is not there, I think you can upgrade it by youself. The price compared to other ones (e.g. Envy, Macbook pro, Sony Z11) is very good. I think it is due to the lack of powerful graphic card. Anyway, it is designed for business or daily use nor to gaming.
So I think it is very competitive in this echelon.
The other reason why no dedicated graphic card, I think it is due to the slim and thin structure design.
-
Certainly, if there is a model with intel HD + 5650, would buy it instantly, do not understand what happens with the manufacturers, are about to have a perfect 13, and do not see in front of their noses... -
I'm still going to get this bad boy. I don't game so I think I can get by without dedicated gfx. It looks perfect. Check this out....

really wish there was an option for 256 GB SSD and 4GB in 1 DIMM. Hopefully that comes when the CTO models are available.
BTW I think the price really wasn't all of the reasoning behind no dedicated gfx. motherboard is tiny on this, switching components would have made it bigger and dedicated gfx would have created more heat that this thing can't handle as it is. optical drives are cheap as hell and light, so they probably couldn't do it. at least not in this iteration. -
I doubt putting a high end switchable GFX like a 335M in this bad boy would've been doable without sacrificing thinness and its 1.3kg weight. In 2010, there are still some tradeoffs required between portability and performance though Toshiba pushes those limits nicely. Still, I have to agree that it's fun to fantasize.
This is definitely a work machine for CPU-intensive applications. If it's got the structural rigidity that Toshiba claims the honey comb structure gives it, it'll definitely be a real Macbook Pro 13 competitor. Too bad this notebook is arriving in July. There's a chance I may get it too late if I order then. -
+ Matte screen
+ Express card slot
+ Good Design
+ 3.2 Lb
+ Great Battery Life
+ Backlit chiclet keyboard
- no nvidia 310/320 gfx
hopefully this will arrive before july 15th and prices on amazon will be lesser than the MRP on Toshiba -
I've contacted with toshiba spain, and they state that the laptop will be available in spain in august...
Hope so, seems the very best option for me! -
That is a good news.
Cheap price on amazon
haha
-
Where did you find the information that amazon will sell it before July 15th.
Thanks.

Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
I saw it the other day available on the USA amazon.com site through someone else but I can't seem to find it today for some reason.... -
Quote this news:
As with its predecessors, the R700 is completely surrounded in magnesium metals, only instead of silver, the new versions will come in standard black or navy blue (available at Best Buy only).

But I can't find it in Best Buy website. I am curious to know when it is available on its or amazon's site, because I am not in US.
Hopefully it will come soon on any of these two sites. -

i love toshiba: great everything.

Does anyone know what material the bottom is made of? The lid is clearly metal, but it doesn't seem clear what the rest of it is.

Some people just crack me up. -
I saw this at BB just now. Its the R705. It look nice! The thing is the HDMI is too far to the edge on the left.
It will give the Vaio S and Y run for the money. -
-
-
-
Yah, its too near to the edge for the HDMI.
Did it run cool? That I didnt check.
The keyboard and overall look is nice. It is not a fingerprint magnet.
The Toshiba had it for $999 at their site, but that include 3 yr warranty and bluetooth. I dont think the one at BB got all this. -
I'm really tempted to jump on this. i5 processor means I can load up and multitask tons of apps like an idiot without much lag. I've been looking to get a 3-year manufacturer's warranty, but it looks like this comes with it!
EDIT: $999 version is still for i3. -
-
I saw it yesterday at Best Buy for $799 and liked it a lot. I didn't play with it for too long, but it is a stylish machine with good performance. I returned my last Toshiba in part because it was a fingerprint magnet; this one, thankfully, isn't.

i don't want to wait until late august for it to ship. going to pick one up at bb on tuesday if they have it. if not, i'll buy a laptop, regardless.
-
Oh, I see. Got it.
Heading over to my bookstore, probably going to check BestBuy after I finish reading a few mags. Will report back my observations if I come across it. -
Nothing. Wasn't there. Arg.
-
Obviously the BestBuy unit (R705) is a lot cheaper, but this particular R700 model looks pretty darn good:
Portege R700-S1320 -
I stopped by the local Best Buy to look at the R705. It's a nice little machine I was disappointed in the screen. Although it's not as glossy as the other machines on display, it is far from matte :-(
I wonder if the ones from toshibadirect.com have different screens. -
Hmm looks nice. It could be a great beater laptop to bring to class everyday allowing me to leave my Macbook Pro in my room away from harm!
-
I saw it at best buy. The build quality was very good. Fantastic looking laptop. Very lightweight. The bottom was not warm at all. A little warm near the vent. It ran cool. The keyboard and mousepad area on top and bottom was cool also.
The screen is the TruBrite kind. Not matte that you can get directly from Toshiba.
Overall very nice. Still want to wait for a review before taking the plunge.
It's this laptop or the hp dm4t for me. The HP is a lot heavier. But the screen sizes are almost the same. 13.3 vs 14. -

I Bought It. I Bought It From Best Buy. Yes! I'm Picking It Up Tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Awesome. Can't wait to hear how great it is. Congrats.

Anyone here familiar with AVCHD video editing?
I'm wondering if the R705 has enough power to edit family-type AVCHD videos, or if I need something with more ooomph?
Toshiba R705 = Intel Core i3 / 2.26GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 5400 rpm HD, Intel HD graphics
Any video editing experts out there? -
I went back to BB for a second look.
The palm rest on both side are coool. How did they do this?
For $200 less, you dont get 3 yr warranty, no bluetooth n no fingerprint reader. Just pay with your cc and you get 1 yr extended warranty. -
two_energy_drinks Notebook Enthusiast
oh, i read what you wrote wrong. yeah, if you can wait, get the r700 from toshiba, because you can get a 4 YEAR WARRANTY. whereas, best buy is two year. might call toshiba to see if i can get a longer warranty.
-
I was deciding between the r700 with i3, the r705, and the acer timelineX AS3820T. I think im gonna get the r705 at BB, heres a link for u guys
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba...ategoryId=pcmcat196200050013&id=1218207656035
Because of the price difference, i think its worth sacrificing BT and other small things for a $200 difference. I think im gonna pick one up at best buy this week
