You apple people are hilarious tards. Hang out with some friends that have money and expensive things. You'll see that people that can afford expensive things don't stress out about harming them to the point where it hinders their use. You buy something to use it, having to buy something else to protect it because you couldn't REALLY afford the original product in the first place since you're so worried about messing it up...well, to you I say thanks for contributing to consumer spending.

I can't wait for a review of this machine though, give us some info two_energy_drinks!!

There are a few reviews out there if you google around. Im debating over picking an r705 up from bestbuy tomorrow or waiting for toshiba to sell the r705 directly from their site, to get the 4 yr warranty included... and 1 guy was saying how the one at BB has a trubrite screen and not a matte finish, and i want it to be matte... :/

Im just wondering if i should wait and see if they sell the r705 from toshibadirect without glossy screen anytime soon...

Saw the R705 at my local BB today. svelte... sleek... slick... sexy... Just very clean... Streamlined but defintely not boring. Just clean lines and every bit as sharp looking as it appears online. I worried that the blue finish would look cheap and dissapoint, but it looks good.

I'm not sure if anyone answered yet but someone asked about the bottom. It's a black plastic, though it doesn't appear cheap or flimsy. I know there's dessension to be had with the intergrated graphics, but as far as build quality goes nothing appears cheap or flimsy about this laptop. It definitely runs cool.

The screen is glossy, but somehow (in the world renowned) BB lighting, it didn't seem to reflect quite as bad as some of the other laptops. Maybe I was just busy being mesmorized by how slick and sleek it looked, but the screen somewhat reminded me of the anti-glare coating on a Kuro, albeit to a lessor degree and without the purple tint.

This is my (gulp), first foray into laptops. I'm hoping someone here might be able to share their knowledge on Wireless LAN...

The R705 shows an Intel 802.11 a/g/n wireless lan, while the R700 shows an Intel Centrino Advanced-N6200 (802.11a/g/n). I know the R705 allows WIDI, but is the Centrino Advanced-N6200 going to be significantly faster?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    B

Seems like all the reviews I found are of people that don't have the actual unit and the ones that had the actual unit performed no tests whatsoever on the unit itself. They just talked about aesthetics and specs

    W.T.F. is this:

Compare Laptops | Toshiba Laptops, Netbooks and Notebook Computers

    1) None of them can write dual layer DVD's??

    2) The cheap best buy version has a hard drive sensor and this resolution+ feature that the more expensive models dont?

    REALLY??!?

    http://laptops.toshiba.com/research-center/technology-guides/resolution-plus

    That says nvidia only? Grrrrr

    Last gripe.

When the heck are we going to be able to get a customizable R700 so I can have 1 4GB chip and a WWAN card instead of a regular wifi card. GET WITH THE PROGRAM TOSHIBA!

Warning: The BestBuy R705 doesn't have an expresscard slot. So can't do an expresscard DIY ViDock for accelerated graphics.

The dock has 2xUSB 3.0 ports. Since the series-5 chipsets run 2.5Gbps pci-e ports, they'd need to gang two together to get 5Gbps speed. Wonder if Toshiba can be convinced in producing a dock with a x16 pci-e slot (running at x2 speed)? Great for external desktop graphics.

I would also like to know, if it's easy to upgrade the hard drive? Is it just unscrewing a cover on the bottom?

I've seen googling that there's a model with 256GB SSD probably launched in Europe and India - can someone find out if that model will be available in US, too?

Also curious to know what's the free space left after Toshiba's shipped installs in 128GB SSD model.

If someone spots any review, please share the link... or better review your own unit!

I finally saw the R705 in person today at BestBuy. Nice little machine, I liked it.

I wasn't in love with the keyboard (I thought the keys were a tad small) but I was in love with how light the laptop was. This particular BestBuy kept the batteries in all the laptops, so you could get an actual feel for weight comparison.

I was surprised at how much heavier the Sony Vaio S felt compared to R705, even though it's not that much heavier... but the keyboard on the S was nicer (in my opinion) than the keyboard on the R705.

I still wish the R700 series came with a backlit keyboard.

You got yours from Bestbuy, right? And how does the plastic on the bottom feel? I am worried that it'll be a great machine accept for a cheap feeling bottom, but I hope you can ease my fears.

the bottom doesn't feel like cheap plastic. The material is so smooth, your fingers glide over it. It doesn't feel cheap. a VERY smooth plastic that your fingers don't get caught on, and it doesn't leave fingerprints. glossed or glossy plastic. you can see your reflection in it.

I can say the apps are phenomenal. toshiba's eco app is ridiculous. saves a ton of power in a common sense and unobstrusive way. there is an app that senses vibrations and moves the hard disk drive head to a safe place. no worries.

one aspect of the design i love is how i can look at my face in the toshiba logo in the back. someone mentioned that the sd slot is poorly placed, but anywhere else it would look jagged and out of place. typing on this machine is good.

honestly, the design of this machine is impeccable.

apparently it's disabled for "stability" reasons. i can enable it, but i don't have to because the battery sensor below left and right click buttons tells you when it needs a charge, etc.

machine runs cool and quiet. haven't done anything too intensive, keep in mind.

Everyone's raving about it! I gotta get to Best Buy to check it out. I don't like the HUGE Toshiba logo on the back to be honest...

And that blue from previous experience with blue Toshibas, looks kind of cheap. Definitely will wanna get black.

yes, there is. in a sheet that comes in the laptop box, a schematic is shown, and there is hard drive access.

soundsgood is right. i personally own the cheapest toshiba from a couple years back with that infamous blue lid, and the R705 looks nothing like it! this is telling me i should post a couple pics, side-by-sides.

sidebar: i like big logos! the dell notebook logo is too small! :D

just an update on the battery icon system ... the icon does show up in the taskbar, apparently when it's at half or below. at a bit below half, the battery icon's hovertext had written 2 hours 50 something minutes hours remaining. out-of-the-box charge, btw.

i shut down and started it up again, and i had 1-2 seconds of apprehension, [scratch]mild annoyance[/scratch] as the taskbar loaded because the taskbar took a second to load up fully.. nothing to be worried about. can't expect perfect start up times.

Some questions when you get a chance:

    1) How is the webcam quality?
    2) Is there a backlit keyboard?
    3) Does it have an internal bluetooth card?
    4) How is the screen in terms of reflections?

if you mean the pinching motion found on macs, i haven't tried it yet. trackpad is responsive, as most are, i assume.

    haven't tried the webcam yet.
    the keyboard isn't backlit.
there isn't internal bluetooth on the best buy consumer model. there is on the R700, however.
the screen is glossy so there is a bit of reflection, nothing that i notice or that bothers me. if the screen is black, you get a mirror-like, good reflection, granted there's a light source, of course. the reflection isn't noticeable while working, and i happen to love the screen.

Oh no, not pinch and zoom, though if you could try it with updated drivers, that'd be great. Two-finger scrolling=dragging two fingers up and down to scroll up/down instead of using the far right side of the touchpad to scroll.

Thanks. Post back when you check out the webcam. Vid quality is important to me b/c of videoconferencing on the road. I could buy a separate cam, but I'm hoping the internal one is sufficient so there's one less thing i have to buy and carry around.

ok, i'll try to try that. pc noob, i guess.

i checked it out. quality is actually quite good. i was surprised. i'm in low light conditions yet it picked up a surprising amount of detail. very good. the only thing is that there was a noticeable amount of grain. graininess? it may have been due to the low light conditions, but the cam is good, i think. cam is high high quality. ever so noticeable grain. good image quality.
