I have Toshiba Portege 3440CT. It's been working fine since I bought it a year or two ago. The past few days the fan keeps coming on, and staying on, even though I might not be doing anything. (It's always come on from time to time, but always switches off after a few minutes). Now it stays on after ten minutes or so of using the machine. It remains very hot underneath. There was a weird crash which I put down to the overheating. I aim an external fan to blow over the machine, which cools it down and the internal fan switches off and all seems ok.
I wondered if this is a common problem and how serious it might be. What are the likely causes?

check that the fan is actually blowing out air. Fans are a moving part and moving parts tend to break more easily than non-moving of course (i.e. processors rarely "break"), it could be that the fan is coming on and trying to rotate, but it's stuck or a piece has fallen off etc. and it's simply not doing its job of venting air properly. Toshiba could be contacted for fixing such a thing, or take it to a local computer repair shop.
Portege fan always on/overheating. Why?
