Should my laptop be able to power up with the battery removed? I had the thing in bits last night to see if I could sort my dead speakers, no joy. I rebuilt it and it was working fine until this evening. Now it won't even power up. Power light shows on when lead attached and battery light illuminates then shows fully charged after a few seconds.

As long as the AC plug is connected, it should still power on.
The fact the LED lights are displaying should be a sign the AC-adapter is ok.

When you try to turn it on, does it still make the "usual" bootup noises? Could be that you accidently [or it accidently] disconnected the LCD/inverter cable; thus creating a blank/dark screen.

    Keep us posted.

Unfortunately it is not powering up at all. No fans, hard drive etc. It worked fine for the last day.

rip it apart again, recheck all connections etc and rebuild very carefully to ensure you didnt overlook anything.

can also try booting it with nothing attached, just motherboard, memory and HDD with ac power connected, see if HDD spins up

Worst case scenario would be if you put too long a screw into a hole and shorted out the motherboard. That would be bad.
