It's amazing how much smoother my system runs now I've taken some of the preinstalled Toshiba utilities out of the startup line in msconfig. Here's what I've turned off:
Toshiba Flash Cards
SmartFaceVWatcher
Toshiba Zooming Utility
Toshiba Service Station
Message Center
Toshiba ReelTime
Toshiba HDD SDD Alert
Toshiba PC Health Monitor
KEnotify
Toshiba Button Support
My question is: are any of these safe to uninstall completely? Right now they're not running on startup, and I haven't encountered any problems yet.
I've already uninstalled the Toshiba Laptop Checkup Station (which actually seemed to be a Symantec program that didn't get uninstalled when I removed the preloaded antivirus software the laptop came with).
Amazing how much junk came on this (otherwise very nice) laptop.
Edit: the "eco" button seems to have stopped working. Not a big loss, I guess.

You might want to try just doing a clean install of win7. I found this helpful for doing it. Also, you can post questions in that thread about programs that are essential/unneeded.

I likewise turned off Toshiba utilities one by one to see the results (I am guessing the Eco button depends on flash cards). I decided that unless I really need the hard drive space that I will leave them installed, but deactivated. However, I did shuffle my Start Menu to tuck all the Toshiba links a couple folders deep, available but mostly out of sight.
BTW, I have subsequently used a couple of those applets - temporarily. -
I would Consider the Toshiba Flash Cards and Toshiba Buttons software somewhat mandatory as they control the hot-touch buttons (if applicable) of the computer including the play/pause forward/revers mute and volume up and down (again as applicable) - It also controlls the "Fn" hot-keys turning off the Mouse (Fn-F8) for example would become unavailable if uninstalling these components.
Uninstalling the HDD SDD Alert Software could disable the Head Parking Features of the software and as such if you're HDD/SDD are active and the notebook receives a blow (dropped or hit) the HDD may not recover.
All the other software/components are more or less utilities that if uninstalled may or may not be missed by the user.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for your responses, everyone. As an update, I still haven't uninstalled anything, but I have removed all the ones I originally listed from the Startup list in msconfig, EXCEPT the Buttons, Flashcard and HDD SDD ones, per your suggestions. Everything is running smoothly. Even when those three were deactivated, the touch buttons above the keyboard continued to work, but interestingly, the Eco button didn't work even after I activated ALL the utilities again in msconfig and restarted, and I still haven't been able to get it to work again, so something got messed up there. No big loss as far as I'm concerned, but if that's a button you use, you may want to avoid messing with those settings. All in all, I'm quite happy with my Satellite A665-S6092.
