Hey guys, I have a Toshiba Satelite x205-s9359. For some reason the past two times that I was playing games on it, it just shut off. It was as if the plug was taken out of it. This happened about half an hour into each gaming session. Anyone know a reason why this would happen?
-
Overheating would do it.... what are your temps when idling and gaming?
-
i don't know, how do i check? the computer didn't feel too hot both times it shut off. it's been hotter before and worked just fine.
-
here you go read install and let us know http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

well, this is what the thing said to me. is it too hot? keep in mind though that i am not running a game while i did this test.

If it was any hotter your laptop would melt.
Stop using it immediately check to see if the vents show signs of massive dust buildup, if not, get the fan replaced immediately.
You will fry the processor if you keep using it.
You can try using a can of compressed air on it to blow the dust out, but if it still runs anywhere near that temp you need a new fan.
Normal idle temp should be between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius while idling, it should never go above approx 80c under extreme loading.
Look up your cpu specs here.
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/366/6
The shut down temp would be 105c, if you continue to run it that hot, it is toast.
You can get replacement fans here. http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/
Get both fans and replace them at the same time, so you won't have to worry about the video going later. -
I was getting the same temps. At idle it was around 78 - 85. It turns out, that the bottom vent of the CPU was blocked by a black plastic which was glued down. So check to make ur vent is not blocked.
If it is, then u will have to open the laptop and remove the plastic. -
99 Celcius for processor is just TOO MUCH (mine gets to 73 after undervolting, was reaching 80 before that, but never more...) you gonna need to clean the vents...
Actually getting to the CPU fan it's a piece of cake... Just need to take out the keyboard... For that you need to take off the little plastic piece above the keyboard (the long silver piece just above the F keys) and there you'll find 4 screws, take them out and the keyboard will come off (beware, don't pull the conector too hard... take out the keyboard with care and you'll see the connector). From there you can clean the fan, for example, with a Q-tip...
And about the black plastic sheet that wall_street is talking about... Some users here also notice that long time ago, and after some test, they found out that temps were hotter without the black sheet... -
Do What Priest-king & JosePerez said. and leave the black plastic alone it belong here. If Temperature is still high might need to clean and reapply new thermal paste to the CPU

Thanks for the help guys.
I purchased an extended warranty when I got the laptop, so I'm good until October 2010. So here is what I was thinking. What if I just let it run hut until the processor actually burns. Then couldn't I just make a warranty claim and get a new processor or even possibly a new computer? I have all of my important files backed up so I'm not worried about that and I figured this way I might get some value out of the extra 200 dollars I paid.
Your thoughts?
On a side note, would it be considered a fire hazard since it is running so hot? -
I've owned the x205 until it got stolen and bought and x305 and I've had this shutting down problem as you describe or sometimes only the screen would go totally blank as if the system went into sleep mode and then I'd have to hard boot.
I thought it was a virus or something my temps never got as high as yours but the gpus would occasionally hit 80 degress Celcius when gaming which I hear is average since even my x205 would yield same results. As the one year warranty I owned almost expired the shutting down would become more frequent and I had 1 month left to bring it in for repairs. The shop replaced the whole motherboard, video card and all, but didn't know what the problem was.
This was back in December 2009 and just yesterday, 2 months after the repair while playing COD4, my x305 just shut down on me again. I've googled x305 screen black out and this seems to be a defect in the Toshiba laptop. I'm thinking since the x205 is the gaming predecessor of the x305 it could be the same problem on yours. I wouldn't wait until something burns out, call toshiba costumer service and they'll find a shop close to where you live that will repair your system, I'm sure they'll fix it even if nothing is burned out yet, since they couldn't replicate the shutting down of mine they just went and put in a whole new motherboard and vid card, just to make sure that I wouldn't encounter the problem again.
Once more, the shop that repaired mines couldn't find out the problem with all their diagnostic tests so I don't think it's a overheating of the video cards even if you got those temp results. So let them try and fix it because it might break down after they do a repair or replacement again and hopefully you'll still have a warranty on it. Mines expired and now I can't bring it in for repairs unless I want to pay for a whole new motherboard myself. -
Well i think you should at least try to clean the CPU Fan & vent... If after that the temps go down, well, you'll save the hassle of sending it to repair, it could take 2 months or more for they to send it back (although i sent mine to repair and it took only 2 weeks, but who knows)...
And i don't think that you have the same problem as Jacob... It's obvious that the problem is for temps... 99 degrees is just too much CPU, it's even too hot for GPU's -
It's better to contact Toshiba about it now. It will be easier for them to get a replacement heatsink or fan than a CPU and probably much quicker turn around time also.
-
Your best bet would be to contact toshiba about the heat issue and just get it replaced.
Problem with My x205!!!
