My friend and I both have Toshiba Satellites and have experienced similar problems with freezing at the initial TOSHIBA startup screen. I really don't know much about computers/notebooks and was wondering if this is something commonly experienced by other Toshiba users and whether or not it can be remedied. Thanks ahead for the help.

Are they Satellite A100s? Those have had major issues with their BIOS updates.

To be honest, I have no idea right now. And I can't check since I'm not within reach of the laptop at the moment. But they're about 3 years old. Don't know if that gives you any info. Does anybody happen to know if there is a relatively cheap way to get this problem fixed or should I just buy a new one?

Haven't been able to use it for a week now.

How long is this delay? The only thing you can do with the BIOS is flash it : /. However, given the stupidity of their design, laptops have no redundant fall-back system for a failed BIOS flash. It would be best not to do this until you know more about the problem.

One last thing off the top of my head, check the boot order to make sure that the laptop boots from the HD first.

Okay, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M45, Windows XP Home Edition. Here's more detail about what happened...

I started having problems with the laptop freezing up a few weeks ago. I had never had any problems with freezing before then. I would be able to use the notebook for a few minutes to a few hours and then it would freeze. I would then have to turn it off manually and wait before I could use it again. I also noticed that the laptop would work sometimes if I tilted it a certain direction or leaned on it for a bit.

More recently, the laptop shows the TOSHIBA screen when I turn it on (as per usual), and then just freezes there or will go on to the "Windows was shut down improperly" screen allowing me to choose to start with last good config. or start normally, etc. The laptop would then freeze if I pressed a key to select an option or just freeze on its own. I cannot go beyond this screen. Tilting and pressing on it doesn't work anymore.

I'm really inept when it comes to computers so whatever you said about BIOS and boot order is foreign to me.

Is there no hope for this laptop? How can I retrieve my files?

Thanks for all your help I appreciate it.
