I just got a Protege A6605-P210. I am a bit of a laptop hopper - multiple consumer level Dells, Dell E6400, Dell, D630, Thinkpad X-Series tablet and laptop, Thinkpad T-Series, Sony SZ and TZ series...I have had quite a few. I have been pleasantly surprised with this little Toshiba gem! It is snappy (after getting rid of the bloatware) and the LED screen is great for a 12.1". With prices under $1000 the price is also right. Just thought that I would share some of my excitement with you!

Hi, congrats on your new laptop.

I am considering ordering one of these, and I was wondering if you are still loving it. I am particularly interested in hearing about the speaker loudness, build quality (flex), and performance. Any feedback would be great.

I had originally planned to buy a netbook but have heard they can be a little underpowered. The A605 seems to be the next best option, and I like the idea of an onboard dvd/rw drive. I will be using it mainly for mathcad, some visual C++ programming, and world of goo type games.

I've had a Toshiba A605-P210 for six months now, and like it. I was originally going to get a Thinkpad x200s, but was put off by the Thinkpad's poor contrast and vertical viewing angles. I came across the A605-P210 at Fry's, saw that it had good contrast and reasonable viewing angles, and took it home. For an ultra-portable, it's hard to beat: Good matt screen, good battery life, ok keyboard, wifi, bluetooth, and built-in DVD.

It has a single speaker, though, as with many ultra-portables, and the volume, while fine for me (I keep it turned off most of the time), is not overwhelming. If sound is important to you, and if you don't want to use plug-in headphone or speakers (which work fine), you may want to look at other machines. Some of the business-class Sony's also have good screens, but stay away from the overly glossy ones.

All in all, I really like the A605-P210. If you buy online, be sure you are not getting one of its A600/A605-xxxx siblings, which may have different characteristics.

Thanks for the reply, helped clear up some of my questions.

I have finally ordered one. I'd been trying to decide on what to buy for weeks and kept coming back to this one. I think the speaker volume should be ok, I do have some external speakers and some decent headphones so am covered there, just in case.
