Has anyone seen one of these in person yet? Right now, they only seem to be available from Toshiba direct and I haven't seen any in stores yet... I'm curious how the screen looks. Are Toshiba's non-TruBrite XGA screens any good?

sorry.. I haven't seen it either, but like you I am very curious about it. I think it may be the right laptop for me, but I just wish someone may have seen it at a recent show (CeBIT maybe?), and can comment on how it looks up close.

The specs look like everything I want in a new laptop, Sonoma, SATA, SXGA, a decent GPU, wifi, 1394, gigabit ethernet, and a great size and weight. It bugs me a little that bluetooth isn't built in, but Toshiba has the SD Bluetooth card (which may be better in the end, because I want Bluetooth 2.0, which most laptops don't seem to have yet, except the new Powerbooks. Changing an SD card would be easier than anything else to add this later). It is also a little annoying that the memory card reader looks like SD only. (I don't like Sony's pushing their proprietary format more, but I unfortunately have a SE phone which uses MS, so it would have been nice had this reader been SD/MS..)

Anyway, I am thinking about moving to either the S100, the Sony S380, or the ASUS W3V. I prefer the S100s GPU specs and non-widescreen screen over the Sony, and the Sonoma features like SATA over the W3V, although the final W3V specs don't seem 100% set yet.

The big annoying thing about the S100 for me, is the lack of being able to order it like the S380. IOW, I want to order my laptop with maxed options in a couple of areas, like optical and HD. With the S100, you have to currently order them as options. I don't think I will need to have two optical drives and 2 hard drives, but can justify it on the basis of spares.. Anyone know if Toshiba will come out with a slim 8X DVD writer option for this laptop soon?

Can anyone comment more on the S100? Especially as pointed out, the screen. If you've seen one, or even if you've found something interesting to read about it more than the specs and brochure that is on the Toshiba website.

    thanks!

I'm also looking to buy a new laptop and the Portege S100 is at the top of my list. Would love to get my hands on one in person so I could see how it actually feels. Will keep my eyes on this post.
