After much research and deliberation, I finally pulled the trigger last night on a Tecra R840.
I ordered CTO, so should be ready to ship in about 8-10 days.
This is the configuration I ordered:
320gb/7200 rpm
4gb ddr3 1333mhz
14" 1600x900 matte lcd
i5-2520
intel integrated graphics
dvd supermulti drive +/- double layer
6 cell battery -66wh
intel centrino advanced n-6230 + blue tooth
webcam w/ mic
fingerprint reader
windows 7 32/64
1 year warranty (my credit card doubles it to 2 years)
All for under $1,100 (before tax)
I am hopeful that I really like it. After seeing the sony sa in person twice and the lackluster battery life on t420s, i think this was a good choice.
also was $340 cheaper than sa.
time will tell..

Excellent. I was hoping that would be your decision. Please review the screen as soon as you get it so I can finally make my decision.
-
Great! I would love to see a review on this laptop!
-
Congratulations!
Looking forward to your comments once you recieve it -
Have you gotten it yet? How's the screen?
-
I have had the computer for a few days. these are my initial impressions:
Pro's:
fast - love windows 7
screen - i like, but i'm not so picky -although seems way better than sony sa
good size screen
quiet
boots fast
small footprint
seems like good build quality
screen hinge is good
easy to navigate
customer service was helpful - had an issue with the recovery disk and they fixed the issue quickly...the rep was american
picked up wifi very quick
cons:
pointer stick - i never had one b4, so i don't know what to expect, but its not so easy to navigate with - i haven't been using it
its not heavy, but its not super light also, definitely feels heavier than than the sony sa - it should though because the screen is bigger
many running processes - like 100. and i didn't install so many things yet
issue with outlook profile. seems to be a bug with google calendar
one other thing, not sure if this is me or because its a new keyboard, but i find that when i am typing sometimes, the cursor will move to another line of text...i only notice after i look up..weird. -

So the screen is in fact matte?
Any pics of your new baby !?
-
Can you also confirm the exact weight by placing on a home scale if possible. Toshiba is much better than Dell which regularly list incorrect weight on it's website but would be nice to know the actual on lap weight minus the power adapter
Thanks! -
yes, i'm also interested. how's the screen color quality. performance on multi-threaded apps like photoshop or video editing?
-
Yes - Same here. Interested in hearing about quality of the screen
Also how does one tee this up with the Sony SA. Both are pretty much the same price? -
Thanks for posting first impressions! Very interested in screen here as well since also considering a 840 w/900p. Any comments on clarity/readability of text (are you going to go blind reading a lot?), viewing angles, color accuracy?
Congrats on new machine

Hi,
I got this laptop
But its screen is giving me hardtime :
It's possible to adjust the brightness but not the contrast , hence the colors seem washed out .
I manage it by tilting the screen back ...
Any insights ?
Thanks -
Try the Fn keys?
I think to increase brightness it's Fn + F7 [Fn key is to the left of spacebar]
Let us know if it works. -

Normally the only way to adjust the contrast is in the graphics properties (Color Enhancement) but you can try using the Windows 7 Calibrate tool which is designed to help tuning the display for best appearance (but be warned that's no reset button).
