It's my mum's Toshiba Qosmio G20, mostly used to browse the net and listen to music/videos.
System specs:
Intel Pentium M Processor 770 @ 2.13Ghz
1GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Go 6600
XP media centre edition x86
When she powered it on and after XP loaded, a vertical strip like 2.5" from top to bottom at the far left of the monitor started flashing like a light bulb about to blow. Then that part just went black.
Now she can't access her icons (they're 'underneath' the black strip & she's not computer literate). She phoned me because she couldn't turn off the laptop because she couldn't find the 'start button'...
Pressing the 'windows button' on the keyboard brings up the Start Menu but most of it is also hidden.
What doesn't look good is that the black bar appears as soon as the pc is powered on and the first thing it does is display a "Qosmio" splash screen (like the motherboard splash screen before XP starts to load).
It even displays as such before I tried to enter safe mode:

I'm thinking the monitor went kaput, somehow.
Or could it be the graphics card?
Here's a short 3 minute video shutting down and restarting the laptop.
(Btw the error you see there is of cisco's network magic process, I uninstalled it and the error went away)

Connect to an external to test if it's the video card, but looks like broken lcd to me.

I connected it to an external monitor, and pic shows up fine.
I'm thinking either a broken lcd or broken cables.
Would a broken lcd show such a clean-cut picture?
Qosmio G20 problem: Black vertical "sidebar" on left of screen covering desktop & icons?
