Have a X305-Q705 I am trying to fix for a friend. It has run smoking hot for years. Was shutting down after running for a few hours. Shut down time had getting shorter. Finally he would have to turn it on and off multiple times to get it to boot.
When powering on the screen remains black. Not even a blip when turning it on. Connected it to a external monitor, same thing. Most times it does nothing except light up the power on indicator. Sometimes besides the power indicator lighting up, the cooling fan will spin up for just a second, hard drive activity light will come on for maybe 2 seconds, then the battery indicator will light and turn off leaving the power indictor on.
Switched the memory modules around with no effect. Trying to decide if it is a motherboard, processor or video card issue. Any help on how to trouble shoot the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah bro, your GPU is shot.
Unfortunately for these specific Qosmios, the GPU's are super hard to find especially the 9800m GTS SLI. Your best bet would be getting your existing one repaired by a professional as it's the cheapest method. The person would replace the chip, or reball the chip. Should only be about $100.
As for the heat issues, it's likely that it's thermal paste ran out (probably ran out years ago shortly after he bought it. lol), and the fans are super dusty. The reason why these Qosmios heated up so much is because the thermal paste that Toshiba put on the GPU and CPU was of low quality, and only lasted a few months. They're also big dust magnets due to the exposed vents on the bottom. These systems benefit greatly from new thermal paste on the GPU. After replacing the thermal paste on one of my ones (9700m GTS model), It now hits 72 celsius under load and hasn't give me problems since. Before that, it was getting around 102 celsius which is just too much.
