He all, I have an 896 qosmio with the "dim" 1080p screen. Well guys I have great news there was a system BIOS update tonight to address the problem. The screen is now bright!!!! For those of ou not wanting the 1080p screen due to the lack of backlighting the problem is finally taken care of. In m opinion it is just as bright as the 720p screen of the 894/893 models. Toshiba does listen to the consumers complaints. I now can't find anything to whine about with this model.

Big difference! I first noticed the improvement when the Starting Windows screen came up!

Yes its brighter, BUT 1080P owners, look at the bottom at your screen. Its a horizontally stripe at the bottom at the screen. If you watch movies with bright scenes like a sky and use full screen you will notice it. You should also notice it if you hide the taskbar in windows.

As i understand it the problem is the LCDs nature on this sceen, its nothing you could do with it

I see the stripe not too big of an issue it is 1/8 of an inch above the bottom of the screen slightly darker then the rest of the screen. But it doesn't obstruct anthing on the screen. I would have never even noticed it if it wasn't pointed out. For me it is a computer monitor with very good picture quality, not a home theatre. So I am definately not as critical as some I guess. It is still 18.5" of gaming glory, now even brighter.

Audi4ever- what is the cause of the stripe?

You can read more about the issue in this thread.

    http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=52...zontal-line-running-across-bottom-screen.html

I have been using my X500 for almost a month, and noticed it 2 days ago then i watched "Avatar", so your right, it isnt a big issue, but i expect a expencive product like this faultless.

I realy love the screen for its clariness and great colours. I loaded some pics from my DSLR camera into the X500 and was blown away about the quality. It also great watching DVDs and BR discs on this screen, the picture is outstanding, and combinated with a quality headphone its a great enterteinment senter.

But i have to go some rounds with myself to decide if i can live with this fault or not.

    Pardon my English

I applied th new bios and I honestly do not see a difference. It wasn't to dark before and its still the same. Good screen IMHO.
