Can someone who has one of these share their experiences? It's on sale on the Toshiba website for $1100 (coupon code AFFX70BG56, which I just verified) with an i7-4700mq, a 770m, 16gb ram, and a 750gb hdd. There seem to be a lot of people complaining about overheating/throttling/shutting down online, and I'm a bit apprehensive about getting one.

don't get it. never get a laptop in which you cannot upgrade all components to. also, the ppl who said that were correct.

Tell that to the owners of the Asus G750 line. I'm sure they'll laugh in your face.

Personally, I wouldn't get the machine PRIMARILY because every review on Newegg and several reviews elsewhere show that it has very serious overheating problems that constantly plague the machine. Unfortunately...there's no easy way to repaste the machine as a whole, so you're stuck with a machine that's considered sub-par for the price.

Yeah, that's exactly what I got out of a few hours of research. I'll probably get a G750JM.

Which is a shame, considering that the X775 I just acquired has PHENOMENAL cooling for the same setup. The 560M never breaks 68*C and the i5 never breaks 80*C. I'm probably going to go with the dual core i7 too, just to keep the TDP the same across the board.

I never get that about forums. Are people lying? Do the forums make it seem more then it actually is? Are people who go on forums doing something bad to these products? or are people who complain amount to less then 1% of the total users for this laptop? I am guessing it is a combination of all. TO say that a lot of people are having overheating issues with this or any other laptop is like to say that "a lot of people win the multi million dollar jackpots". it is simply not true. Out of 200+ units of the x70 sold since late 2013 we have had 0 returns, 1 repair for a bricked bios (likely done by the user), 0 complaints. How is it that a dealer such as my self can go through hundreds of these units with remarkably low defect rate while someone on a public forum can say "there seem to be a lot of people with problems". where is the quality in this information?

Geared2play.com: Okay, then get it then. Better not play RE6 or Sleeping Dogs. Cuz you will be able to cook eggs in front of the vent.... gonna be able to cook your hand too. Not gonna even mention 3Dvision is going to be choppy on high settings if you decide to use that. Ppl also know not to trust an actually retailer completely because they will say anything to sell the product.

imglidinhere: It's pretty obvious that you shouldn't get anything that you can't upgrade or else you'll find yourself buying multiple laptops (exceeding more than $3000 eventually) and/or complaining on game forums that a game is slow when it is in fact that your machine is. As an adult, the smart thing would be to do when spending that much cash is to future proof yourself. There's no arguing or disputing about that.

    again you are stating misinformation
this qosmio x70 is full upgradable in the right hands. the cpu, ram, msata, hdd1, hdd2, optical drive, wireless card. all upgradable. not easy to do but MOST gaming laptops except for msi and alienware are difficult to upgrade.

You can not cook eggs on this qosmio any better then you can with any other brand. the thermal dynamics are almost the same for all gaming laptops with the same specs. alienware, msi, asus, qosmio, and any other minor brands with the same specs all share very common thermal envelopes and all exhaust hot air. some do from the rear, some from the sides. Yes its cool to have exhaust on the rear but there is a price to pay for that as well.

I probably should not say this as a vendor but I categorically disagree with almost everything you stated. the only accurate thing you have stated is that 3d vision will give you less fps. that part is true for any laptop however. Feel free to attack me and accuse me of lying just to sell it but I have a reputation for speaking my mind and in my experience your statements are simply misinformed opinions at best.

"In the right hands" ~ thanks for proving my point. When you have to wordplay, you know you're wrong xD

It's so upgradable that they have 2 models that come premade and cannot be customized. It's so upgradeable, that it doesn't even come with the highest gpu or highest cpu available. Yep, truly makes sense. I have no idea why you would mention the hdds or the small stuff when everyone knows that those little nicnac things are upgradable on everything. When a person mentions upgradeability of a laptop, they are only worried about the cpu and the gpu because it's common sense that the hdds, etc are already upgradeable. And even if it could, if it's hot now, what do you think the temps would be IF YOU COULD upgrade? You must have missed the part where the OP asks if anyone has ever had one before...

Can I upgrade my laptop's video card or increase i... - TOSHIBA FORUMS

"You can not cook eggs on this qosmio any better then you can with any other brand. "

That's funny. My sager exhaust sure does feel 100x cooler than what my Qosmio use to feel like. Qosmio exhaust was so hot that it actually burns your hand if you keep it there for more than 10 secs (when playing powerful games). Yeah, that is soooo much misinformation xD

Also, if you agree about 3D vision, then you are contradicting yourself. If the laptop is fully upgradeable like you say, then 3D vision would work just fine now wouldn't it lol.

Like I said, anything for you to sell, huh (laughs at 'I probably shouldn't say this as a vendor' as if that automatically makes you right).

You want to prove that you're right? Find cpu and gpu upgrades that fit in the machine online and post a link to it. Find a machine that has hardware that is higher than the stock hardware online for sale.

If the USER cannot upgrade by themselves, it's not FULLY upgradeable. You can wordplay all ya want.

I never said user can not upgrade. I said there is a certain level of difficulty. I can upgrade every single part in there in less then 10 minutes and have it closed and shut in that time however I am trained to do so and have done so hundreds of times on this particular machine and tens of thousands on others. look I am all for proving a point and arguing as my reputation precedes me. In this case I will simply say I disagree with the bulk of your opinion regarding this model.
3d vision does not work just fine. 3d vision always reduces frame rate when enabled. 3d vision is a thing of the past and few people care which is why nobody makes 3d vision laptops (xept alienware and even they will stop sooner then later)

"I never said user can not upgrade" ~ I know you didn't. I DID. Can't read now?

Highs on your link = Intel i7-4900MQ and the gpu = no higher than 770m. Dude, the toshiba site can do that themselves those are the exact stock things you can get on toshiba's site. Do you see an i7-4930mx for the toshiba? NO. Do you see a 780m or higher as the gpu? NO. Then it is NOT user upgradeable. You've proved nothing. I even posted the link from the official toshiba forums saying that it is not fully upgradeable.

When you use 3Dvision on a toshiba, it lags. When you use 3D vision on a laptop that has higher specs, IT DOES NOT LAG. End of story. Everybody knows how the framerate works. You're just using more wordplay and don't really know what you are arguing against (as a seller would).

My initial point was that the laptop was not user upgradeable. Thank you for proving me 100% right while you say that I'm wrong at the same time lol.

every single part is upgradable except the gpu. nobody should upgrade the gpu in any case in any laptop. the proper process if you want something better is to sell what you have, take the money and buy new generation. some including you may disagree with that. you are entitled to your opinion and for some it may be the right option to upgrade the gpu when desired. 99 out of 100 times it is prudent to sell your laptop and buy new generation. EVERY laptop "lags" proportionately to its specifications when 3d vision is enabled. If you want to use the term lags then fine. When 3d vision is enabled simply put the frame rate will suffer. You are clearly an educated person with well above level enthusiasm for computers however I stand behind what I have said because what I say applies in general to almost all gaming grade laptops. I am simply here to make misinformation stand out. what you are stating is exactly that with all due respect. There is nothing for me to prove I am not here to prove anything. I am actually stating the obvious while you are comparing oranges to grapes. I am pretty sure you are the same person that swears by icd or arctic silver repasting of a new laptop or even a used one. Consider for a second that maybe just maybe your opinion is flawed and someone who sells this stuff for a living has it right? is that possible? just think it over it makes one open minded to consider a contrary opinion based on education and experience rather then personal opinion which I am also capable of.

'every single part is upgradable except the gpu' (edit: and the cpu) ~ that was my whole point. You said I was wrong.

I already said what it is meant by being upgradeable or not. Ppl don't count hdds and ram upgradeable because of the fact that every laptop can up those. Not every laptop can upgrade the GPU and CPU. If the user cannot upgrade the CPU or GPU, the machine is considered NOT UPGRADABLE. Every consumer knows this phrase means this.

3DVision cutting the fps in half in order for it to work is not the same thing as LAG. When you use 3Dvision and you see that it is going in slow motion (too slow for you to enjoy playing) that is referred to as lag. When you use 3Dvision and everything visually moves at normal speed like it is supposed to, then that is referred to as normal speed. With that said, the toshiba LAGS. My Sager or machines like it with the same specs, DOES NOT LAG. Get it?

A user can upgrade both the cpu and gpu in a Sager or similar laptops. The toshiba's CANNOT. Get it?

My saying was: It's not smart to get a laptop that isn't upgradeable because you will just keep having to buy more laptops. Why would I tell a consumer as a consumer that it is smart to do such a thing knowing toshiba is always behind in providing the latest tech? They released a glasses free 3D machine that couldn't even fully utilize the 3d because it was so underpowered for christs sake. The FACT that the machine gets super hot is A FACT, not an opinion. The FACT that it'll cost you more money to keep getting inferior machines is a FACT not an opinion. It has NOTHING to do with open mindedness. But of course, in your view, open minded-ness means wasting money irresponsibly so that YOU can get the money.

    "rather then personal opinion"
Love the way that you pick and choose what you want to read and what you want to ignore.

it will take any cpu you put into it except 57watt cpu for 2 reasons
    1. the powersupply is under rated
    2. the heatsink supplied can cause overheating when rendering in such utils as maya.

I didnt pick and choose anything. everything I have said remains the same and I stand by unconditionally.
as far as it getting super hot. I will disagree. the core temperatures are right in line with all of the following

    msi gt70 with 770m or 870m
    alienware 17 with 770m or 780m
    asus g750

I do get one thing. you and I can agree to disagree categorically as long as you state personal preference while I sit here and defend general practice and common acceptance amongst dealers like my self and majority of customers. Nothing wrong with your opinion as long as you don't proclaim to speak for masses and for common practice and commonly accepted terminology. Your opinion is unique to you and few other like you with your situation and personal preference.

And it's your right to disagree. Doesn't mean you're right; as seeing MANY users throughout google search say the same thing INCLUDING MYSELF. You can't say I'm being biased. Because if I was, I wouldn't have bought the machine myself at that one point even though I saw what users were saying. As soon as I confirmed it as true, I hurried and sold it. I had a hard time selling it for minus 300. It sold at minus 800.... My hp dv6 sold better than that and it's way less powerful. What's the relevance? Constant complaints about the heat exhaust. So feel free. The consumers know or either will know. My speech, is for having users not make the same mistake I did and get the mediocre while there are other better alternatives. Until you play SD or RE6 on it, don't wanna hear it xD

'as long as you state personal preference'
I'm sure that's why i said Sager OR SIMILAR. Because OR SIMILAR (a wide other range of laptops) is my personal preference :/
    Yeah, that makes sense...

I ve been around for 13 years now. I know without any doubt that nothing I can say, no proof or argument will convince a savvy enthusiast like you that you may be wrong. Though I know I will not convince you, I hope someone who reads my comments understands the difference between personal preference and general understanding. I still disagree and will continue to disagree on the following

    1. heat
    2. upgrading

I didn't come here saying you are stupid. I simply said you are mistaken when you think speak for everyone. you speak for a select few. to state that your experience is the norm is very far from fact. It does not mean you are wrong to think it. You are wrong to say it because your experience is shared amongst few. If ypur experience was norm or even 10% of norm then my return rate on these laptops that you call "lemons" would be sky high and it is not.

What does 13 years experience have to do with a machine that just came out 2 or 3 years ago? You sound like a cop. "Why you running if you did nothing wrong." *Gets beat down anyway*. Gloating over how many years you've been in the business proves NOTHING.

I said 13 years has proven I can never ever convince someone like you that you may be wrong
at no time did I gloat. Gloating would be me telling you my years of experience trumps your personal opinion which you are entitled to. I am not too sure you are reading my replies. it seems to me like you do the same thing everyone else does when I intervene and correct misinformation.....that is pick me apart and pick apart what I say. Nothing I said is inflammatory other then me correcting you which in it self is wrong for a vendor to do around these parts. Next someone will chime in and accuse me of being unprofessional and tell everyone never to buy from me. Been here done that too many times. So much for people who may be wrong being open minded :)
