Seems like Toshiba actually opted for a halfway decent GPU this time.![]()
Took 'em long enough I suppose. :3
I've honestly been dying for a reason to come back to the Qosmio lineup. This might edge me that way... depends really...

-
Looks good but the single fan design still worries me.
Hopefully the Haswell with the Kepler remedies the heating problems of the x770/x870 -
Indeed. The only issue I have with the single fan design is that the two heatsinks are connected together, or at least they touch at the fan assembly.
The GTX 770M is a bit cooler than the 670M was though. Should be a well rounded machine. Heck, even if they used the 765M it'd still be a killer laptop. -
meh toshiba went down the drain these past 10 years, their design and quality are questionable especially at the price they are sold...
-
Looks awesome. I still wish Toshiba would go back to the 18.4 inch screen. That is one of the things I love about my X550-Q893. Even without all the bells and whistles, the screen is huge. I have resisted upgrading for the last few years, because I could still play current games on my laptop, but after three years of owning this machine, it is starting to show its technological age and I may have to bite the bullet and live withthe screen size.
Wonder if they will FINALLY make a matte screen version because the glare from these Qosmios is absolutely atrocious, even in bright indoor light. -
It's not a 18.4" screen, but the standard is now a FULL HD [1080p] screen on all models.
Somewhat of a trade off.
Can't wait for those reviews! -
NO TOSHIBA until 18.4''!!!
-
It won't happen. The only 18.4" laptop left is the Alienware M18x.
I can't imagine temps will be much better than the previous gen. Haswell isn't that big a difference from Ivy Bridge.
I'm surprised it's touting an HDMI 2.0 port...2.0 hasn't even been finalized yet, as far as I know. Won't make much difference anyway, the amount of people with 4K monitors is tiny and the content is even scarcer.
Wonder if it'll have any Windows 7 support...it's basically DOA for me if it doesn't.
I dunno...I know my Q893 is getting old, but there isn't really any laptop out there that catches my eye. Especially at the prices they're asking these days...sheesh. -
770m at that price is a scam...
-
Seeing as how you get a 2.4GHz Haswell i7 and a 770M for LESS THAN A GRAND, I'd say to jump on the design and worry about temps later.
Seriously, I doubt it'll be THAT hot. -
Yeah, maybe 18.4' not happen and Toshiba then should be ready to see consequences. If Toshiba WILL NOT make a difference like 18.4' screen, I don't see any plus or point to look for Toshiba even.
-
They had a big sale earlier in the week. I don't know how I missed that.
-
-
I think they are charging 1199 in Toshiba us, not bad price but not great either.
-
The 17" models are plenty good for now. I'm eager to see how well the cooling system does. The 770M is reported to be around 80% faster than the 670M and apparently runs fairly cool too. -
-
Ordered the x70 today from toshiba's site cause the shipping dates are 2 weeks after one orders. Got it for $1100 with a few stack able coupons. Fingers crossed. lets hope it doesnt have the overheating issues u guys were talking about.
-
-
whats 'mxm'. i also see that best buy has started carrying them. its the more expensive x75 though. if i see a good deal next weekend there around that price, i might just pick it up
-
Detachable/upgradable laptop GPU form factor.
-
$1100 today if you use the code TECHBX70. Specs seem pretty good for the price but the size/weight and no reviews are preventing me from pulling the trigger. Also found a post talking about the battery life of 30 minutes while playing Starcraft 2, and the high heat generated by the machine.

there are always trade offs when buying a gaming laptop.more so then others. The manufacturer probably tries to keep the costs down by compromising on some features. both the laptops in my sig have had problems. especially the dell xps.
i guess i should research this overheating problem . does the x70 use the same chassis as the model with the issue. i gather its because of single slot cooler or something. -
-
I recently bought this machine at $957 (two coupons) but with a 4GB RAM and 750GB 5400rpm HDD. I've upgraded it to 12GB RAM and with a 256GB ssd by myself. (total $1200 now)
Till now it feels good and sexy. But the heat is unpleasant. When I played dota2 at 1080p all high setting, the CPU temp goes up to 90+. I couldn't put my hand near the fan cause it's so hot. I'm buying a cooling pad from amazon. -
hey cfsym , try propping up the lap top from the back to see if it helps with the temps and please let me know. i dont know how the cooling of this laptop is designed but usually they pull in cool air from the bottom and blow it through from the side or back. ive used a bottle cap on my gateway to prop it a few inches to allow the intake fans more space and on avg the laptop runs 7-8 degrees cooler.
-
Yeah, the only issue I am seeing here is that this machine was designed to sleek in looks and quiet under operation. Realistically speaking, no one cares about a quiet gaming machine... Toshiba really needs to recognize this.
Can you give an accurate readout on the Temps with a screenshot? If you can, use EVGA Precision's On-Screen-Display feature and show us what's going on. -
Terrible Review;
Batteries in any gaming laptop should only be used for surfing and light use. At best as a UPS supply to get things shut down during power failure. Almost all gaming laptops down clock on battery to avoid over heating battery.
What happened to posting gaming temps?
Lets see, 17" gaming laptop heavy and poor gaming battery life. Sounds like people buy a 500hp racing car then cry about gas mileage?
The new CPUs are rated 47 watt and good for 100C. I don't like 90C but Toshiba keeps building these single fan monsters so I can only hope they won't throttle or suffer shortened life.
+1 on the using a good cooler.. or least keep the AC cranked. -
The fan is a little bit noisy so I guess I'll just leave it stop. -
temps dont seem all that bad. try what i suggested and vents aernt blocked. is there a recent FPS like battlefield or COD u can try it on ?
-
Yea, 81-85C is awesome in a gaming environment. A lot of i7-X775 owner have and still complain about throttling during gaming.
Any signs of throttling or slow downs after 5 or more minutes of gaming? -
Yup; 80s is ok [upper 80s is worth approaching with caution]. Anything in the 90s is worrisome; I only hit 90s with my x505-Qosmio when we're having a heat spell up here in WA state [houses up here do not have air conditioning].
To compare your temps to the x775, that model would regularly get into the 90s while playing games. Thus, people would revert to the initial 1.10 BIOS to prevent it from throttling.
Glad to hear everything is good so far. -
maybe run an intense game or even the latest 3dmark in a loop then test the temps using HWmonitor which shows the cpu and gpu temps.
-
Dude, do you believe it is coming up on THREE YEARS since I bought my Q893 and you and I spent hours and months talking about it in my review thread?
Anyway, I am with you. I am not quite as militant as PredatoR_TR about the 18.4 inch screen, meaning it isn't a deal breaker for me. Yes, the extra 1.1 inch is really nice considering that the screens are measured diagonally, but like Alex says, the payoff is 1080p on all models, plys, of course, a brand new machine with brand new architecture.
You know what? My "proving ground" was going to be Saint's Row IV, which I was waiting to get specs on. But apparently the game will play really nice on my Q893, though obviously not with all the settings maxed. Not that one game only would push me over the edge, but if that game wouldn't play on my Qosmio, I would probably buy into the new gen of lappies a month early, as I intend to get a new laptop this Fall anyway. So a month or two early for the game would have been fine.
Honestly, I think three years of AWESOME use is enough from this Qosmio, and maybe I could get some decent coin for it on eBay or just give it away.
Anyway GREAT seeing you! -
Another very unpleasant thing I discovered a fault on my touch pad. It's not flat and two corners even stretch out from the borders. The left button is much higher then the right button that you can feel the difference. It doesn't influence the use but just so disappointing. -
I discovered a fault on my touch pad recently. It;s not flat and two cornered stretched out from the border. The left button is much higher than the right button and you can easily feel the big difference. It's very disappointing. -
ouch on those temps. 95 is way too high. i guess with these next gen systems we dont have much of a choice. asus is much higher priced and seems to have a lot of problems of its own. although hard to read the aus g750 thread past few days with all the arguments going on.
i thought the next gen cpu and gpu were supposed to be more efficent and run cooler. oh well will find out in a few days myself. -

my x70 just came a week ago. I'm traveling so haven't done much testing nor have i done any gaming as the games are at home. but the boot up and response is crazy fast. few seconds and I'm on the password screen . and almost instantly on the home screen and that's on a the stock 5400rpm drive. i got the Samsung 840 SSD at home but I'm thinking if its even necessary or should i just send it back to newegg.
-
Please let us know if yours throttles with games like BF3 or other. 90C seems to be the new low with the newer CPUs during gaming. I do a lot of video encoding so love the new CPU's!
-
i downloaded the modern warfare 2 demo, not a very taxing game, for testing out the laptop, in a relatively cool well ventilated room with the the back of the laptop propped up a bit too. All four CPU cores shot up to 92 degrees in a very short time but the GPU remained around 75 c. No throttling or slowdowns noticed but its only MW2. Hot air blowing out wasnt unbearable but even after shutting the game down , the right side of the laptop remained warm for a good half hour.
there might a bunch of things wrong here. first the obvious cooling system is in-adequate . and/or most of gaming tasks are being offloaded to the CPU-int. graphics. -
Keeping the back end raised works well. I like using coolers in that they help with drives(spinners) and hot ram sticks while keeping air moving to cpu/gpu intake fan.
Several single fan laptops reviewed in several forums have problems with WFO gaming. Why a single fan in big 17" chassis has me scratching my head but price is nice.
I'm seeing more throttling reports in the Toshiba X forums so lets hope that Toshiba does the right things other than keep lowering CPU turbo speeds? -
A few questions about the new Qosmio line if anyone can answer them:
-What is the difference between the X70 and the X75?
-Why, in the name of all that is holy, would a laptop manufacturer pair a non-touch screen with Windows 8? That is without a doubt the STUPIDEST thing I have seen thus far. Windows 8 is an inferior OS to Win 7 unless you have a touch screen.
-Is there a 3D model of this laptop? I ask because I didn't see one on Toshiba's site, either for the X70 or X75, but Amazon lists one with "3D" in the title, only they don't mention 3D in the specs or the description, nor do they talk about 3D glasses included or not, leaving me to believe that the "3D" in the title of that X75 model is a mistake. -
2. don't know
3. no 3D -

A couple of more questions:
I am considering waiting until September/October then pulling the trigger on a new Qosmio. The reason for the wait is because historically, Toshiba does some form of a refresh in the very early parts of the Fall for their gaming lappies, which is how I bought my X550-Q893, literally within DAYS after it was launched in September of 2010 for a very low price. That line was basically a refresh of the models that came with the 360m GPU and was the first time Toshiba offered the 460m. So I figure it is worth a month or two to see what's on the horizon. So my questions are:
1. Any word on anything new coming for the Qosmio line this Fall? Surely there must be something, though obviously I would seriously doubt it would be as big as a next-gen GPU like mine was. Would probably be just a few more features added or something, maybe a bump in CPU, HD, or graphics RAM?
2. What is the difference between the currently available X70 and X75?
3. For any of you guys using a gaming Lappy with Windows 8 and a NON touch screen, how are you guys getting along? My problem is that this laptop is NOT going to just be for gaming. It is going to be my primary desktop replacement and I am a novelist, do a lot of work on my computer in the office and such. So I am wondering how horrendous Windows 8 without a touch screen will be for non-gaming PC work?
Thanks! -
Notebookcheck X70 review is up .

notebookcheck have review in german( I believe) they they get it translate in to eng.
Personally, I really like the japanese-ish styling (note the font choice xD), sharp red w.o all the bling bling, but they never get the basic (cooling/screen/battery etc) right ~~
Qosmio X70 spotted and announced! (GTX 770M included!)
