    Hello everyone.

I just got the Dell XPS 1710 from Costco for 2699.

I looked at the Qosmio 650 at the retail stores and love the,
    Build quality,
    HD,
    Case,
    Monitor.

The 660 has HD, bigger HD (120 on 1710 vs 2x120), brighter screen, but lower and video card (7900 vs 7600). Price is only $100 more with a 6months reurn policy.

I will be doing lots of photo and video editing (Heavy PS CS2, Premiere 2.0). Some gaming, BF2 type. Office and other general apps. I will not be traveling with the laptop. I will be moving it around a little around the house is any.

I want to stay under $3K.

Am I doing the right thing by going with the Qosmio 660. How is the built quality and support from Toshiba...

Should I be looking at other systems/configurations.

    Thanks for any feedback...

    Murat

uummm... thats a bit hard to say... the XPS is better coz of the magnesium shell and the 7900 GPU, the Qosmio is better in every respect except the one mention. although i don't really like the inclusion of the HDDVD drive; its useless at this point, its too slow, can't burn any HD DVD, so yeah. if you don't travel much (coz the xps would be better suited if you wanna travel by foot, or public transport eg. bus), and dont mind playing the BF2 without the maxed out graphic; then Qosmio is for you! i dont know about toshiba service unfortunately. though usually if you buy from an Authorised Dealer (AD) and u know that they are trustworthy, then if you've got problem talk to them and they should sort things out.

btw, how is your experience with the xps m1710?

hi I was also debating between the Toshiba Qosmio and the Dell 1710, I went with the dell because the video card was better , the cpu was faster also the model I got had 2gb memory 3 year complete care for about the same price as the toshiba but I would still have to spend an additional $$ for the complete care warranty so I chose the dell. I have an A100 toshiba laptop that I use for work and travel which I really like. You can always buy the toshiba from costco as well and test them both.

    OK.

I got the Dell a few days ago and ordered the Qosmio 660 to be here next tuesday. Installing the apps on the 1705 as I have time.

    So far on the 1705:
Screen is a little too dim for a $2700 laptop.
120HD will be too small for me.
The keyboard and the top is a little too plasticy. I will compare it to the Qosmio when it arrives.
Screen resolution seems to be very good so far.
Audio quality not bad for a laptop.
Not too heavy, light traveling should not be an issue.
Have not played the BF yet. I will be reporting my experience with gaming soon.
Like the touch pad and the buttons, nice feel to it.
Keyboard is light gray, kind of nice, makes it easier to see at dark.
I will be doing some video editing this weekend, so I will be able to tell how that goes.

    Thanks everyone.
Let me know if anyone has any specific questions on the Dell while I have it.

I had a xps for all of 15 minutes. I got a Dell XPS 1710, red in color and had the better video card. This was the first week the updated XPS m1710 came out.

I opened the box, set it up to next to the first Qosmio, (not the G35) and just wanted to cry. I could not justify a 3400.00 plus computer that the screen was at best, half as bright. The Dell audio just paled by comparison. I called Dell, and explained i want to return it. And she asked why...i set the phone inbetween the two computers...and asked her what she heard..."gunfire". My response was that was Jarhead, on the old Toshiba Qosmio. You never heard the dell did you? it is playing the Sound of Music. Quite honestly, the Dell sounded more like a gnat compared to the first Qosmio (i think it is a G15), it was more like "what is that stupid background noise?"..oh its the sound of music on the dell. It was just no where close between the two units.

She said "inferior quality" was the reason to returning it as she filled out her computer form. I never said that, I said I was not satified with the unit.

I wanted the better video card on the Dell XPS, but i really could not justify going backward in so many ways with the XPS.

You have to want the screen and sound to justify the Qosmio.

Me, I am fine with the trade off you get with the Qosmio. I waited until the G35 came out. Yes, it is heavy, and yes the HD-DVD is unimpressive. But, overall I am quite happy with the unit. I do play games but maybe not some of the higher end ones and it seems just fine to me. I never do a frame rate...as the qosmio never "lags"....when it does, i think it is network issues ( i think it rubberbands, that is the slang name for what it does)

The screen is brighter than some desktop models at work. The sound can be loud enough to get you trouble when a movie starts with terrible vulgar language.

Video editing...I been hacking apart X3 for the heck of it. It can lag or stall when you load the major segment into the video editor (We are talking the entire first hour of the movie....loaded as one file) Simple splitting and triming into small segments. Not a big deal. Really not a big deal at all.

I just love the machine almost as much as the first Qosmio G15. I think the G15 screen is a tad brighter tho.
