Hey guys,
Just got my Qosmio q8102X yesterday. This is NOT a review, but a question to other Sandy Bridge owners.
I've noticed this laptop runs hotter than my Qosmio q894.
The GPU stays about the same (maxes out mid 60s), but the CPU is all over the place.
The CPU idles from 40s to 60s and after only 20 minutes of Counter-Strike: Source, it reached mid 80s. This seems definitely hotter than my q894.
I wanted to ask if other Sandy Bridge Qosmio owners could verify their temperatures and post them on here. I want to know if my laptop is performing normally, or if I need to exchange it.
Thanks.
P.S.- You can check your temps using HWmonitor (need to be running as admin to use it).

I've been using HWmonitor for the last 3 hours. It's been idling from 40s-50s (just like my q894), but playing CS:S the CPU got into the mid 80s again.
There's a post that the SB chips may be running warm [that I also posted this question in].

Alexmuw welcome back to team Qosimo.
80c wow. that is high. I've learned to overclock my 940xm, and I only hit 78 degrees tops playing metro 2033 for 2 1/2hrs no cooler.
Maybe since SB is supposed to be more powerful than the original i7s than that temp is normal? -
I'm playing Counter-Strike 1.6 (older game, not source), and typing this and it doesn't go above 55 C.
So maybe it is the turbo boosting of the SB processors making it hot? -
I think I'll just leave this here;

Ya, I posted that thread and responded there. The only response I got wasn't helpful.
I'm hoping someone with a SB Qosmio can post their temps on here (measured by HWmonitor). -
Forgot to add. The game settings on both laptops were and are the same.
Also, forgot to mention that when I do exit out of CS:S, the temperature IMMEDIATELY goes back to 60 Celsius. So maybe it is in fact due to the aggressive Turbo boosting of the SB chips? [can turbo boost all 4 cores at same time]. -
UPDATE:
I just played 30 minutes of CS:Source. However, this time I DISABLED MULTI-CORE SUPPORT. After 30 minutes, the CPU reached a max temp of mid 70s.
So it looks like the extra heat could be due to the new and improved turbo boosting. -

i have the same toshiba q8102x i am playing sc2 for 2 hours and it never past on 75c
and on wow i had only max of 70c.
all max graphics
hope this helps.
i bought this laptop because of your review! thanks by the way. -
Thanks for the update rocky.
I actually exchanged that Qosmio for another q8102x. The temps on this Qosmio [my second q8102x] are cooler than the previous one. I believe the first had a bad fan, as it made a "boating" sound when it turned on.
I'm very impressed with this Qosmio. This second [replacement] Qosmio is the one I reviewed in my writeup; so don't worry. Glad you liked it
Good luck
