Toshiba doesnt want anyone touching there laptops. THey just started making gaming rigs a few short years ago. They are not really upgradeable at all. The CPU and GPU are on the bottom of the mainboard which requires complete removal of the motherboard for access.

Well, the Qosmios were first released around 2004, so they've been making them for a while. Also, most OEM manufacturers (ASUS, Dell, HP, etc..) the GPU cannot be upgraded (unless the GPU is designed for that series and is provided by Toshiba).
Toshiba Qosmio E15-AV101 Review - Laptops - CNET Reviews

However, that x770 looks amazing!!! :D Too bad it's only 17.3", but I guess that is more "mainstream" than 18.4".

I dont agree that they made a gaming laptop in the early Qosmios. More a business multimedia machine. Untill the X200 they didnt have much or a graphics card unless all you played is Quake!

I actually do like the look, and for the upgrade part. The X300s were, X500s were, I see no reason why it shouldn't bee on X700s. Also, OP did not ask for how hard it was guys, the question was if it was possible.

include usb 3? i think this replace x505 bye for the 18.4 inchers x505 is the last of its kind x505 would be the most perfect laptop if it had usb 3 and cpu upgrade options

I agree. USB 3.0 is a big let down.
However, most of the people I've come across who want USB 3.0, want it specifically because of the faster file transfer speeds when used with an external harddrive.
If that is the case, the x505 Qosmios have eSATA which is as fast if not faster than USB 3.0 when used with external harddrives.

Eh, I could take it or leave it. It's nice to see an aluminum enclosure (at least, I think that's aluminum), but the screen size is chopped back down to 17.3", and quite frankly, it doesn't look as classy as the X505. Some of the elements, like the speakers, remind me of the X305, which is not a good thing. All in all, it just doesn't look like a cohesive design. Looks way too similar to the dv7 for my comfort.

The tech specs are good though. I think I see a USB3.0 port on the left side.

I really hope this doesn't kill or diminish the X505 line in the future, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will.

I wonder if the X770 is a result of Toshiba hooking up with that gaming team a few months back. Either way the specs seems good.

Well I don't think the specs of the x770 are that great.. Ur x500 is very similar and I bet their won't be much difference in performance. They should install a high end gpu if they want to have a good gaming laptop.. Though the aluminum seems better than plastic.

    First post !

It seams Toshiba made Qosmio x770 official, with nividia releasing the GTx 560m
Just found a video from Notebookjournal.DE
    YouTube - ‪Toshiba Qosmio X770 3D (Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M) Hands on by notebookjournal.de [German/Deutsch]‬‏

OMG this notebook is perfect for me, it looks stunning has an update graphics card and is slightly smaller then the 18 version !

Edit: Also only Toshiba and Alienware will have the GTx 560m version coupled with Optimus ! And since Toshiba is cheaper and looks better,i am going with that one.

Hail to +-5 hours non gaming battery time !

This model looks great, I like the screen very much. I wonder what those who bought the then new SB Qosmios feel. I mean, all they got was a new GPU. Now with this model the buyers are getting a new GPU, and CPU and redesigned lappy.

How much bettor is the GTX 560, over the GTX 460??

We should wait for the scores from the review sites, but the official data is about 15% better(frequencie wise) plus the advantage of being more energy efficient and heats less, so it can be overcloaked to degrees the 460m couldn't be.

So low to medium increase in FPS compared to the 460m.

But the price compared to the older notebooks models should stay about the same (if you discount the 3D version).

Too bad that it is only 17.3' !!! 18.4' differed Qosmio than other mid range gaming laptops. Now IMO Toshiba has nothing very special or unique to prefer while there are choices like Asus or MSI.

I still like more the new Qosmio because of the metallic chassis.

Compared to MSI and ASUS all is equal now. Guess in the end, the buyers preference/bias will decide.

I think the new x770 is awesome! :D I would get it except the hardware is pretty similar to what I already have, and the screen is smaller :( [I really want the 18.4" screen]. Both have SB-i7-2630QM, and a GTX- ...60m card.

I hear the GTX 560m is like having a RADEON 5870; about 5-10% faster than the GTX 460m. If it came with a GTX 485 or RADEON 6970m, then I would be mad :)

IMO, when nvidia refreshes their GPUs, the first number is indicates the new series [5XXm], but the next 2 numbers indicate the relative grade of the card [X60m]. Since they're both X60m cards, I wouldn't expect them to differ too much.

    Keep the updates coming.

It looks like you have the option of getting a non-3D 1600x900 display with Optimus, or a 3D 1920x1080 display without Optimus. They don't appear to offer a non-3D 1920x1080 display with Optimus. That is a disappointment.

It does look like a really great lappy. But, can someone please tell me why Toshibia never puts the top video card in its flag ship systems. I mean instead of giving us the GTX 470 card, in the 18.4 X505, we got the 460card. Instead of getting the GTX 485 the top mobile card (until the GTX 585 is released) this new system is getting the GTX 560. Don't get me wrong, the GTX 560 is supposed to be a good card (like the 460) but, its not something I would consider selling my current lappy in order to get. Simply put, where is the WOW (factor) I must get this lappy? Yes, if I didn't already have my current system I would get this new one. Aren't these systems for gamers-Yes a niche group? Are the makers of sager and Alienware the only ones smart enough tho use the top, top cards?

Woops, fell into a little rant. :p

hahahaha scanner, u have a valid point but to be honest, i will prefer graphics card like 560 or 460 any day over more high end cards like 485 or 585 because of the reason that those cards generate more heat thus reducing the shelf life of laptop. its a simple physics that more electron transfer more energy but at the cost of producing more energy.

doesnt matter what sager or alienware claims, they r still installing those laptops with cards that produces more energy. now i definitely not a computer expert but from what i have understood is laptops doesnt matter how good their manufacturers claim for their cooling are still a compact unit. u cant compare them with desktop. classic example is asus g73. i have read on this forum how ppl were complaining about their systems getting overheat even though asus has that cooling looking multi cooling system.

second easiest thing laptops r likely to get is dust though that can be minimised by regular cleaning though that can affect laptop ability to utlize more energy and produce more heat as well in long run.

biggest advantage for gtx 460 or 560 if i compare with older geforce cards of previous generation or new cards of same generation is it produces less heat while maintaining optimum efficiency and good fps in high end games. thats what an ordinary consumer whos not an expert in computer and laptop thinks.

i will go for gtx 560 or 460 mainly because of heat issues with higher end graphic cards. To me those two cards are ideal for laptop machines but again thats my personal opinion and though... :)

It would be nice for a GTX 470/485, but that would easily put the Qosmios into the $2000 price range.

That would force me to buy the less-desirable ASUS G73.... Plus, I believe the greatest demand for gaming laptops is in the sub- $2000 range; [trying to hit that Bell-curve].

Toshiba knows if someone wants a more powerful laptop, they can buy the Alienware M18x or SAGER; [which I would assume sell less units than the Qosmio; ie less demand due to price].

    alexmuw,

I agree, the top card would increase the price, but for the crazy extreme gamer, price is not considered. ;) Why not give the niche buyer (extreme gamers) the option? Toshibia, would make extra coin from those niche buyers. Is it that all these lappys are mass produced like cars, and it would be to much to have the top cards set aside? Or, a possible better idea, would be to redesign the next gen lappy to be more user friendly and give us the ability to change the card .If the consumer, wanted the higher card Toshiba could sell it to them like it sells all those other (highly over priced ) parts. Since, I have had the pleasure of taking my lappy apart it is an aweful design for the consumer-WHO THOUGHT THIS MAZE WAS A GOOD DESIGN.

Unfortunately there does not seem to be a non 3d model with a 1080p screen... does anyone know of a Toshiba coupon to bring the 3d model down in price a bit? Or how do you think 1600x900 would look on a 17.3 inch screen? I'm using 1360/768 on a 25 inch screen right now and it doesn't bother me...

    They look awesome!!! :D

I feel like I just got this machine, now it's been replaced. The optimus technology seems like a real plus. I wish my q8102x had that feature.

    @bacnation.
If your ok with a 1368/768 resolution, you'll be completely fine with a 1600x900p screen. I think people overplay the desire for a 1080p screen and people just assume they need/want it. I have a 945p screen (1680x945p) and it looks awesome. 1080p is a nice feature but I think it can be unnecessary in most cases; you need to ask yourself if you would benefit from a slightly larger resolution. Also consider, everything will look "smaller" on a 1080p screen vs a 900p screen.

Go to Best Buy and look at their ASUS G73SW; it has a 1600x900 screen. I bet you'll think the resolution is fine.

    Good luck

Hey thanks for the reply, I don't mind how small it looks (had an envy 173d and I liked the screen) but I don't think that it is really necessary. After reading that I think there should be enough area with the 1600x900 on the screen to work with and if I have to I can always just plug into a 1080p screen if I need the resolution for some reason. I guess I will also get higher FPS too :)

    +1

Has anyone bought the X770 model with the 900p screen? Is it acceptable? I'm starting to lean towards buying the Qosmio over ASUS and MSI, but not really seeing many opinions on this is slowing down my resolve.
