Well I just received me Qosmio x775-Q7272 laptop and I thought I would give my initial impressions of the build quality. It is as far as I can tell completely constructed out of plastics but that is not entirely bad... The base of the laptop feels very sturdy to me, I put a little forces on each side and I did not notice it bending at all. There also does not seem to be any keyboard flex unless I push hard enough to break something which I do not plan on doing. The Screen portion is less sturdy and it can flex but I do not plan on finding out its limits. I also like the keys themselves, they are smooth and I like how they feel and they don't press down too deep which I also think of as another plus. The touch pad was more responsive than I was expecting and I have had to adapt a little, moving my finger considerably less than on my old hp pavilion laptop to move the cursor the same distance. The buttons on the touch pad click rather loudly but I prefer to tap the pad so I do mind it and some may enjoy the feedback. One thing I really like is how light this laptop feels to me. I had an Envy 17 for a few days and this thing feels considerably lighter (to me). I think an important thing to mention is the height of this laptop. If they haven't changed it yet, Toshiba states the height of this laptop to be like 1.2-1.4 inches when all actuality it is 1.2-2.4 inches. This is because the standard battery (the 8 cell) sticks down from the laptop an extra inch and who is going to carry around their laptop without the battery? (sorry if you do but?)
Another thing I need to add, the speakers are GREAT. Really they are, I have them up all the way and there is NO distortion/crackling. The little baby sub on the bottom of the laptop is really more of a gimmick than a real sub (like any sub on a laptop I think?...) but I do feel some vibrations coming from it on lower notes and it is definitely adding something to the sound. I am also in no way disappointed with the 1600x900 display. If nobody had told me this could have been a 1080p but I suppose I don't really have an eye for that stuff. It gets plenty bright for my usage and nice and dim when the lights are out.
Sorry about all of the picture's quality, I broke my digital camera so I used my phone and as you will soon see, the pictures aren't great.
I will add more things as I use the laptop more and feel free to ask questions I will answer anything that I can. I will also try to get some pictures up later.

Thanks bac, really good overview of the x775; and it's the first one! I bet it'll get a lot of responses from other potential buyers. +rep
I am disappointed it is NOT a metal body; this was something I was hoping Toshiba would catch onto (just a pseudo-metal paint job). [Sorry if my previous comments steered you into thinking it was metal, as I was under that impression].
As for the height and back being raised, I think this can benefit the gaming aspect of the laptop (a feature I like). Raising the back not only can help with cooling, but makes the keyboard easier to use when gaming; since it is tilted towards you (most desktop keyboard are also slanted towards the user).
Glad to hear there is little flex with the keyboard, Toshiba is usually very good about this. Though it sounds like the screen might be a bit flimsy.
Also glad to hear to your ok with the 900p screen. I personally think there is too much emphasis (especially on these forums) to persuade everyone to think they need a 1080p screen. Though it is nice, it isn't always needed (I actually like the 945p res on my screen as opposed to the smaller text 1080p). It's very nice considering it allows you to save a few hundred on your system.
[**EDIT** - x775 Qosmio also come in 1080p, if ppl are wondering, they just cost more].
The sound should be good on Qosmios, as they come standard with the Harman/Kardon speakers. This is a BIG benefit Qosmios have over the similarly speced alternatives/brands.
Glad to hear your enjoying your new Qosmio. Really looking forward to some pics.
Good luck -
Great review ! I'm Planing to buy it too. Still looking for more reviews and impressions before placing my order.

I really need to update this thread. It turns out I received a pretty bad unit, the battery wear was already 33.4% after about 2 hours of use and the fan does not work so playing Just Cause 2 for about a minute or two spiked the CPU temps over 93 Celsius. While I doubt every model will ship with those defects, I would wait to see some more reviews from others. Another major problem was that even though I purchased the onsite repair 3 year extended warranty which would have covered those problems, it takes Toshiba 3-4 weeks to apply extended warranty so my only options were to ship it in for repairs (lengthy process) or to get a replacement (big hassle and also somewhat lengthy). After complaining and going through about 10 different calls they told me they would apply my warranty immediately and "it should work the next day". That was 3 days ago. I unfortunately am returning this laptop and am going to settle with a business grade notebook so I will have to accept that I won't have the ultimate gaming machine. Everything I said above still stands however; the parts that worked were great and if there were no problems with this laptop I would have been very happy, but there were and they were not resolved to my approval. I cant really recommend this laptop but I also can't discourage the purchase of it. If you are considering it you really should just wait for a few more reviews and see how things turn out.
-
WOW!!! That's really disappointing, both in the Hardware failures and implementation of the warranty.
I was really looking forward to this series, but a bad battery and especially a non-functional fan are a bad sign of quality control issues. I really hope Toshiba did not drop the ball on this model.
I do appreciate your time to tell us all this info. I know a lot of people will find it very helpful. [+rep] I do hope they give you a full refund without anymore hassle.
Another alternative you might want to check out is the ASUS G73/74 series. Should be about the same price if not a bit cheaper.
Keep us posted -
Yes, I will definitely keep everyone updated on the return process, they still have yet to email me the return labels (hopefully after the holiday and weekend)... As for my next decision I completely changed the style of laptop I was going for and purchased a dell m4600 since I will just take my desktop to college now for any gaming I may want to do (and a ps3) and I will have a business grade workstation that should (hopefully) last me many years with good-decent performance. With a special plan offered through dell I was also able to purchase the laptop now and I wont have to pay for 30-40 days after I receive the unit (and there is not an increased price or anything).
-
It is a good one
-
hmmmm, i sort of had my eye on the Qosmio X775-Q7270, probably the same one....i also have been looking at a refurb 16 or 17 asus from egg, or the msi, or maybe samesung.....dell xps 15 and 15z are on my list too.....going to see how the qosmio pans out with other buyers,.,,it sure looks nice
-
I was debating between X775,ASUS G74 and MSI GT780R and after looking at the specs,X775 is lighter than the other 2 making it a little more portable.
But unfortunately there are barely any reviews for it -
The x775 has optimus; not sure if the others have it.
-
I just bought a Qosmio x775-3dv78. I should get it in two days and I will do a review of it.
-
I'm really interested in this laptop and i would like to know the cpu temperature!
That is the only thing i'm worried about the qosmio x775/x770!
Thanks! -
I suppose that it is probably not very helpful since I doubt it would be like this in normal use but my x775-q7272 cpu temps stay between 40-55 degrees Celsius for internet browsing and light use (no games) and this was without an operational cooling fan...
-
It seem like my x505 in light use!
Run furmark for a bit(10-20min) and see(with funspeed), how hot cpu,gpu gets!
It'll be more helpful! -
-
Early customer reviews here. Also good deals on few remaining x505 q8100 series.

I am thoroughly disgusted right now. I went through 2 HP Envy 17's in the last week (one couldn't wake from sleep, ever; one had a bright green stuck pixel that I couldn't fix or force myself to ignore). So then Microcenter gets the X775 in stock and I see this AWESOME laptop with the fancy video card AND Optimus so it'll actually get decent battery life, right? Microcenter advertises it 4+ hours.
Amazon says it has Optimus: Amazon.com: Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 17.3-Inch 3D Gaming Laptop (Fusion X2 Finish in Red Horizon): Computer & Accessories
Toshiba themselves say it has Optimus: Qosmio X775-3DV78 3D Laptop
The only problem is the Intel HD is nowhere to be found. I suspect it's disabled because 120Hz 3D + Optimus apparently don't mix well ... I'm going to call Toshiba and see if I can find anything out. All I know is I get less than 2 hours of battery life, the Intel HD graphics driver isn't installed, the adapter doesn't show up in Device Manager, etc.
I'm just ... disgusted. -
I see that you posted about this in the new X775-3DV78 thread, so I wanted to comment that the 7272 has been confirmed to have Optimus working. It's the 3DV78 that doesn't have it.
-
-
On the toshiba direct site it plainly says X775-3DV78, lists 3d AND optimus under"Main Specs" on top of the page, and invites you to buy it for $1899. Its right there ...
-
Are you talking about the info page for x770 laptops? because they are technically separate from the x775 model and I only see optimus advertised for the x770 laptops.
Alright I finally found it, yeah I suppose you are right. Another thing that toshiba advertises wrong on their page is the height of the laptop. The back is well over 2 inches with the proprietary battery and even without it, the back of the laptop slopes down around where the battery goes. -
Yeah, they advertise the 3D model specifically as having Optimus on the same page where you can buy it. I'm sure it's just an oversight and not deliberate shady behavior, but it's super annoying anyway. I wonder if at some point there will be a way to turn on the Intel HD. I understand that the 3D/120Hz display will have issues because of the way Optimus uses the IGP framebuffer but surely there should be a way to say "turn all that crap off and just use the IGP"? But I doubt it. Would be nice tho.
As for the height, yeah, that's kinda shady since it's NOT just the battery that elevates the machine, it's the battery housing, which is part of the laptop, so even with the battery out it's just as tall. So this laptop is actually as thick at that point as a G73/G74. But not as chunky overall as those machines, and not as wide/deep/heavy either. Not NEARLY as heavy.
In Toshiba's defense the actual body of the laptop is pretty slim for a machine with these specs, and having the battery elevating the back end makes for more comfortable typing and gives the cooling system some breathing room. I'm sitting on the sofa watching TV and typing with it in my lap right now and it's really comfortable. I've had "gaming" laptops in the past and they tended to be leg scorchers. This one stays icy cool as long as you're just surfing the web and stuff.
I really like this computer and if I had known there was no Optimus going into it I'd have had different expectations, I guess. But the combination of a bunch of websites (including Toshibadirect.com) saying it had Optimus and Microcenter claiming it would get over 4 hours on the battery set me up for disappointment.
So now I am going to use it for a few days and see if I even care about the battery. I rarely ever need/want to take it anywhere without outlets for more than a little while anyway.
I am rapidly becoming addicted to the screen, which easily rivals my Vaio or a Macbook Pro, no easy feat. Also to the keyboard, which is just awesome to type on. In the past I've seen a lot of Toshiba machines with horribly bouncy, flexy keyboards. This is not one of those. The entire keyboard, even the number pad, is very solid and satisfying to type on. And the red backlight is nice and subdued, as well. And the speakers are AMAZING. I've never heard a laptop sound this way before. It actually thumps. Not crazy deep bass, but for a laptop? Awesome.
I wonder if there will be a 12-cell battery offered in the future ... but the only way I could see that working would be to make the battery stick out the back side of the machine, the way the old Gateway FX battery did, or making the computer even TALLER back there, which would be awkward at best. No good option really. And having to lug the power brick around wouldn't even be so bad if it wasn't so freakin big. -
Hy, I was wondering, since you have the 3d version of qosmio, if it is possible to switch the 3d on and off. Overall, are you satisfied with the laptop? What score does windows give? Thanks
-
Could you give me more detail about the temps when u playing games? I am about to buy this laptop.
-
costco has the q7275, which has 8gigs of ram for 1299. I saw the q7272 at frys, which was had a very bright screen. but the paint job, with the texturing was atrocious. had it been more demure I'd have a review right now =(
-
I myself am planning to buy a new laptop. My choices were ASUS G53, Toshiba Qosimo X775 and MSI GT683R-242US. All prices are about $1500.
Now i think, i'm gonna go for the last one...
I've read a lot about ASUS G53 having faulty power button, and of course GTX 460M is not as outstanding, as 560M, so I'll pass that one
After reading about this temp issues with Qosimo, I'm more into MSI and it's Cooler Boost technology. With CB on, fans can get pretty loud, but it guarantees optimal CPU and GPU temperatures.
Another thing is RAID 0 in MSI. It splits data between two drives, so reading and writing is faster than normal. Gamers should appreciate that.
Optimus technology sounds cool but, after giving it a little thought, I don't play games on battery, and if I take my laptop out, turning on the ECO mode isn't that difficult and my battery should do just fine.
17,3" screen with resolution 1600x900 is a little bit low for me, but on the other side 1080p in 15,6" is an overkill. MSI wins because I have 24" monitor, so I don't need such a big screen and 15,6" laptop is more portable
The only thing i'm concerned about, is battery - people say it's weak in Toshiba, but i have no information how it works in MSI so I can't be certain of anything.
However, I haven't decided ultimately, so if someone has another opinion, maby want to correct somthing I wrote wrong, feel free to criticize -
My X775-3D runs quite cool. Don't let a faulty unit sour you on an otherwise awesome machine.
It warms up when benchmarking or gaming but as long as the intake vent on the bottom isn't blocked it doesn't get uncomfortably hot. Certainly not nearly as hot as my dual core i7 Macbook Pro. -
All in all, the 3DV78 (and likely the rest of the X77X lineup) is becoming sort of a wonder laptop for me. It's exceeding expectations in every regard: performance, audio, video (minus the need for Toshiba to release new drivers), and heat control. -
How's the overall build/keyboard quality of it ? does the CPU throttle under full load ?
Also how are you finding the battery life ? If it gives like 3-4hrs for normal tasks,I'll probably conaider one -
Info is wrong. It is a quad core. My mistake -

Never mind; my bad.
I saw the Qosmio they had last week, it stated i7-2620M. Glad they changed it to the 2630QM.
If it is the 2630QM for $1299, that's a $200 savings.
**EDIT**
Confirmed 2630QM core.

yup ive been eyeing
-
I still don't know which laptop I'm going to buy between asus bestbuy version and this one.
-
I would do research on the Best Buy G74 before purchasing.
The Best Buy versions of the ASUS G-series are notorious for having gimped and watered down components. As an example, the G73SW with i7-2630QM had a modified GTX 460m that was not only 1.0 GB (vs the true 1.5 GB) but performed significantly lesser than a true GTX 460m card.
If your thinking ASUS, get a "real" ASUS G74. Xoticpc.com is a good place to check. The actual G74s cost more than the Best Buy versions, but have superior components.

The reason i want to buy Asus BB or this Toshiba because i want 1600x900 resolution screen. I don't want 1080p screen on a laptop. It will hurt the performance. And i saw this laptop has only one air vent out, but the Asus has 2 at the back. So i think Asus will run cooler while gaming.
-
Also, the bus on the 560M in the Toshiba and the real G74 is 192bit, whereas the bus on the BB version is 128bit, one of several reasons the BB model seems like such a steal.
And the 1080p screen on this Toshiba (and the real G74) is stunning. The 1600x900 screen on the BB model is cheap and looks the part. -
i will visit Costco this weekend to check it out, hope they have it in store. BTW, this toshiba and the toshiba at Costco have 1600x900 screen only.
-
Hmmm...Micro Center has the Qosmio X775-Q7270 for $1199.99. It is also a 1600x900 screen. So the 560m in the X775-Q7270 is the 192 bit version?
Has anyone seen the screen on the laptop? I have seen the Asus G74sx at BestBuy and didn't think it was all that great. Anyone here have this laptop yet? -
Well, I know the one in the 3D version is 192bit. Someone with the Q7270 needs to run GPU-Z and clear it up for sure, I guess.
-
The GPUs in the Qosmios should all be the same.

Ok, thanks for head up. I will order this online, but Im still debating where to get, one at costco and one at amazon. I will pay 140x.xx for costco's model( plus tax), but it has 8gb and 90 days return if i dont like it. Otherwise, if i get it on amazon, i pay 1400( it has 6gb), but i will get a xbox 360 for free since im a student. Any opinions? Where should i get?
-
Hard to say. I can say the Costco model will come with Costco's 2nd year warranty; in addition to the 90 day return policy.
If your purchasing the Qosmio for gaming and school work, I would skip the 360 since that Qosmio will be able to play any game made for the xbox.
If you do go Amazon, you could sell the xbox for an easy $150 and that could help reduce your overall price.
Good luck -
How to get another year warranty forbuying at costco?
-
Laptops purchased from Costco come with 2 year warranties; this is a Costco only thing. Granted, Toshibas operate a little different than the HPs and Dells. [Dell and HP service their brands for the duration of 2 years].
First year covered by Toshiba, second year covered by Costco [during 2nd year Costco will use a different repairer than what Toshiba used; Toshiba does not repair their own laptops. It is subcontracted to a depot called Service.NET].
I actually bought a 2 yr On-Site Toshiba warranty for an extra $100 [repairer comes to my house], but I can still fall back to my 2nd yr Costco warranty if Toshiba refuses service.
Look here. There's a big image that's says 2 yr warranty; next to Costco Conceirge Service [also a good bonus].
Costco - Toshiba i7-2630QM 2.0GHz Laptop Blu-Ray ROM 1.5GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M
Good luck -
-
Yup. 2 yr standard warranty still means you have to send it into a depot and wait 2-4 weeks. If standard is ok, then Costco offers the better deal.
On-Site means you can still use your laptop and within 2-5 days the repairer comes to you to fix it. I just want as little down time as possible. -
Any news on this laptop? OP's new one already shipped? I wanna know about temps, since it appears to have only 1 vent
