I don't know much about the X505 series but can a few people give some opinion on the quality overall for these laptops? I'm deciding between the Q892 and the MSI 740 and i remember awhile ago my friend telling me toshiba are one of the worst laptop makers. Supposedly their HD dies out in a year? I'm not asking for performance opinions, just on the durability and the quality of Toshiba X505 series.

Well, the problem is that, by and large, the people in this forum who own the X505 series laptops, myself included, have bought them over the last few months. This means that it will be difficult to answer questions about, say components that might die after a year. I am sure there are a few owners of this series of laptop that have them for just about a year, since the original X500 Series launched during the holiday season of 2009, but I have not seen anyone active in the forum presently who owns one that old.

So all I can comment on is the quality I have observed in the 2.5 months since I bought the newest generation Qosmio. I have the Q893, and I suspect that the majority of active X500 Series users also have one of the Q89x models which released in late September. So far, I have found the quality to be excellent. I think the laptop is fantastic, not just from a performance standpoint, but from an aesthetic and craftsmanship one as well.

Here is a link to my review of the Qosmio Q893-X505:

Right now, I am using a Toshiba Tecra that's about 10 years old. The cursor jumps alot while I'm typing and it's a bit slow sometimes but it's really rock solid.
Can't convince the boss I need a new laptop because it still works well, it's just heavy and looks like something Mulder and Scully might have used.

Had a X200 sli before my X500 and no problems with the HD, but its always some who have problem no matter brand.

The X500(X505) seems to have good quality, but as ChiroVette says, its to early to conclude

I've had mine for just about a month, 505-898, and no problems (knock on wood).

I will say this is my third Toshiba over the years, and the Hdds in the other two have never had a problem. With the shear number of pc made there is bound to be a lemon or two.

I own the X305 Q7-11 lap-top and after just under 2 years of ownership I can honestly say that I love it and have had no problems with it at all. :)

these laptops are big, they are desktop replacements, taking that in mind, if you arnet going to be taking it mobile that much the durability of the overall laptop goes up drastically.

the x500/x505 line is durable, its sort of plasticy but not in a bad way.

as far as hdd i have never had a hdd fail, you have to take it into consideration how these people are using their computer, like i said if they take it mobile, and drop it and scratch the platter, or bump the laptop with the hdd in use, take that into consideration too, not all computer use can be treated equally some people are just use more caution when they use their pc's than others

I am constantly mobile with my laptop, which will be 3 months old in a couple of weeks, and as I said, not one problem. Just a note about my use: This is NOT a desktop replacement as far as I am concerned. It is a MOBILE desktop for me. I am on the go a lot, and work in different places all the time with a lot of down time. So I wanted a juggernut of a gaming rig that would not so much e a desktop replacement as it would be a desktop that I travel with constantly.
