OKay, I am having trouble running Fallout 3 on my new laptop, and after running a DxDiag, the tech support person told me that my Nvidia driver is three months out of date and that I should download the latest one.
My question is, should I go through Toshiba's website to do this, or can I just go right to Nvidia's website? I ask because I know that I have heard of some laptop owners screwing their systems up (most notably the G73's) by not getting drivers from the website of the company that created the laptop.
My other question is, I have also heard horror stories about video driver updates messing up certain games. Is this a problem with the 460m?

I think that problem only exists with ATi (or AMD now), everyone else just downloads from Nvidia.
BTW, the latest driver was just released, with official support for the 460m.
NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.89 WHQL -
I used that very link, downloaded the driver, tried to instal it, and it failed, saying that it was not compatible with my version of Windows. I went to NVidia's website and downloaded their auto-detect application, and lo-and-behold, the site told me that the manufacturer of my laptop requires that I download the latest drivers from their site. So I am on Toshiba's site now and the only thing I can find is version 8.17.12.5912. It is like two weeks newer than the one I have currently instaled. Odd that Toshiba doesn't seem to have the latest NVidia drivers for my laptop available.
Any suggestions?
Edit: Check that. As I was downloading the driver, I ran a DxDiag and saw that while the date is different, that is the driver I already have on my lappy. -
Sorry about that, I gave you the WinXP link instead of the Win7 link:
NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.89 WHQL
Try this one. Sorry again. -
OKay, but what about the problem that NVidia's downloaded app told me that I had to get my drivers from Toshiba directly?
-
Just try them and see if they work, you can always remove them. Alot of OEMs say that, but that doesn't mean you have to use their driver; for example, alot of G73JH owners used MSi's ATi drivers because Asus' kept GSODing.
It would be better if you said what exactly the problem with Fallout 3 was though. -
The problem is that it is freezing in the really long first cut scene. I still have yet to patch it with the latest version, which I will do now. But when I called Bethesda tech support, the technician told me that (and LMAO!!!) Windows 7 was not supported!
And if I try them, how do I go back to the original drivers if they don't work?
Edit: Okay, I called Toshiba Tech support and they told me that I can go ahead and install the driver frm NVidia's site. I got all the way to the end and the installer said "Checking System Compatibility" after which I go an error message at the end of the install that said "Install cannot continue. The graphics driver cannot find compatible hardware." -
But the problem with the cutscene doesn't sound driver related at all. I had a similar problem with BFBC2 on one level, it turned out to be a DX10 error. I switched to DX9 for that level, and it worked fine. -
Well I also updated my DX9 drivers, which I believe will help and I am about to apply the patch for the game and see what happens. Then there is always "Compatibility mode" to try, though I am not sure which one to try: Vista, Vista Service Pack 1, or Vista Service Pack 2.

Yeah, I had issues with FO3 as well. The game would freeze up after a couple minutes. There should still be my thread in the games section about it.
I had to tell the game not to ready my processor as a quad-core and force it into dual-core. Sounds strange I know, I guess the i5 is special that way. -
Hmmm okay sounds like a plan. How do I do that exactly?
-
Bethesda's games are notorious for PC bugs, and Fallout 3 was terrible in that respect. Make sure you get all the patches and fixes before you go messing with the computer itself.

Well good news, bad news: Your solution helped and the game works fine. Now I wish it didn't. What a boring, dull, un-fun gaming experience this is so far. I have spent over an hour trying to do I don't even know what. Near as I can figure out I am trying to get out of the stupid Area 101. It took me over a half hour to figure out how to actually arm myself with a weapon I was holding. Now I am stuck with that weapon an no ammo and keep getting attacked. I can't even figure out how to put the weapon down so I can fight with my fists, not that I have any desire to do that, mind you, but the brain trust that made this alleged game decided that I can't use the pistop as a melee weapon. So now I am wandering a maze of corridors insanely low on health, no ammo, being attacked by annoying, giant roaches, and everything seems to be done through the stupid pause menu by hitting either F1 or "B" on my 360 controller, NOT that I have absolutely any clue how to...I don't even know what to call it, use items?
Seriously, is this supposed to be fun? Is this what "RPG's" are like? About five minutes ago, I rememberd that this game was made by the same people who created Oblivion: Elder Scrolls, another game I absolutely hated, and the light bulb went on and I quit to Windows. -
What difficulty is it on? You mean vault 101? Bring up your pip-boy 3000 to equip your weapons, like the baseball bat.
I don't play with the 360 controller, I tried, but I like the aim with the mouse.
FO3 isn't a FPS in the normal sense, so there is no weapon melee. Just blunt of sharp objects that be equipped. -
It's just on the Normal setting, but it isn't the enemy difficulty that's bothering me. The whole game feels clunky and clumsy to me. I keep having to bring up that Pip Boy thing and it is really annoying to navigate. I can't seem to find anything on it. Honestly, I prefer just cycling through weapons and blowing the crap out of everyone.

You can set hot keys to weapons and I think chems too. I don't remember with the controller, but I think you hold down a number and select a number.
The game isn't as fluid as a shooter, it more a WRPG/Shooting/Adventure/Exploring/Crafting/puzzler. Of course it's a jack of all and a master of non.
I love the game's atmosphere and gritty feel. It's almost eerie to enter places and see the decay of civilization.
