Hello notebookreview. I'm posting for a friend, who owns a Toshiba Satellite Toshiba Satellite A35-S159. My friend is having an issue, she believes it is her power adapter. The computer won't charge, just starts up for a half second then dies... no battery power. She believes it's the adapter because it doesn't heat up, which it did before even if it wasn't connected to her laptop and charging.

Is this known issue with this laptop? It could be the battery, but she feels it's the adapter.

My question is, if it is the adapter, how do I help her find a new one? The adapter info is

    API 1AD43

Can I help her find one online pretty readily? There were some universal ones at Best Buy but for 130. dollars. (!)? Thanks so much in advance for any help.

It could also be the AC jack that is soldered onto the motherboard. The later A70 model had this serious problem, and so do many laptops today of poor quality. Can she wiggle the adapter plug in the socket?

I was afraid of that possibility. I will ask her this. If that jack is loose, is there a way to fix it at home? Thanks.

There's a good selection of Toshiba adaptors at getpartsonline. They may not be the exact same model number but the same DC voltage and current rating should be fine. Or there are plenty of third-party universal PSUs which have a power tip to fit Toshiba.

However, you might want to first check that the existing adaptor is dead. The best test is to use a meter to (i) check the voltage on the power tip when it is plugged in; and (ii) the resistance of both the input and the output. If either is infinity then something has blown. A PSU should not be hot when plugged to the mains but not into the computers, so if it used to be hot them maybe it was dying.
