Warning - I do not know very much about all things computers so this may seem like a really stupid question to some - but I could really use an answer. So here goes:
I bought a Dell Inspiron a few years ago and it came with sealed disks for Dell Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 (oem) with a product code. I had paid Dell extra to get this and they pre-loaded it for me and sent the disks.
I am now a new owner of a Toshiba T115D-S1125 with an external disk drive. I need MS Word etc. The Toshiba pre-laoded version is a trial version and wants a product key which I do not have as I have not bought the program again.
My Question:
1) Can I load my Dell Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 (oem) disks on to my Toshiba with out hurting it? I am so scared I am going to hurt this machine.
2) will it run?
3) If it will not run and so I need to buy a product code for the pre-loaded trial version - does nayone have any idea where i would go to buy this code? Somewhere on MS site I suspect - but does it have to be a version specific to my new machine?
4) is there anything that I should be aware of when doing any of the steps above?
5) what questions should I be aksing that I have no idea to even ask?
Thank you for your help

1) Not legally. It's tied to the system it shipped with.
2) Again, not legally.
3) Start looking http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101759021033.aspx
4) Yeah, it isn't legal to do so. Even if you do get it to install, it probably won't activate
5) Try downloading and using the free OpenOffice Suite to see if it is capable of doing what you need. It's free, legal, and will do 90% of what MS Office can do. http://www.openoffice.org/ -
before shelling out more money on another license call micorsoft and see if the license can be transfered... i've been lucky in the past of getting a rep that would authenticate the license on a new machine. its only illegal if its not authorized by microsoft if a microsoft representitive authenticates your key to the new hardware you are fine.

I had no idea it was illegal - i thought i owned the software and could use it on which ever machine as long as i only had one machine running it..i.e. old computer replaced with new computer so could relaod the software. Oh well.
I will call Microsoft and see if I get a nice rep - I suspect I find a Technical Support number of them to do this on - or would it be a different departmnet then tech support/
Also- if they approve it - the Dell OEM version will not hurt my Toshiba in anyway - correct? it should not have code specific only to Dell which will louse up the toshiba if i run the software once installed?
Thanks again to you all

It IS possible that it does have code on it that will only allow it to be installed on a Dell system. It won't harm you system, it just won't install.
And no, you don't own ANY of the software you run on your computers. All you own is a LICENSE to use it on your computer. If it is OEM, it is only licensed to be run on the system it shipped with. You might be able to get MS to transfer the license to a different system from the same OEM (Dell to a replacement Dell, etc.) but they can NOT legally assign it to a system from a different manufacturer. The only time they can transfer it from one system to a different system from the same OEM is if there is a hardware failure and the old system is replaced by a new system from the same OEM. Some moron from MS might do it for you, but they wouldn't be doing it legally. -
I just installed MS Word 02 that I got with my Dell on my 4 day old T115D-S1125RD without a hitch. I also put it on my computer at work but it did ask for the code, I put it in and then they or Microsoft asked me to call an 800 number of which I did and got an activation code.
You will not blow up your machine or hurt it in any way. If you need it, use it. Usually, you are allowed to put software on at least 2 different computers so long as you're not using them at the same time. -

Papasmurf69,
I believe you. I would and did install it anyway. I have had to call MS in the past and they had no problems with it. I hope MS doesn't go broke from it.
