Our review model came with a broken optical drive and now the WSJ and BW reviews report the same problems. I'm just curious to see if the production models are having this problem still or if it was limited to our pre-production review models.

Hi folks. First post.
Bought a Toshiba U305-S5107 from a local Circuit City Friday. The optical drive is DOA. Drivers won't install, can't read discs. Taking it back to exchange it today. Toshiba tech guy on phone said, "yup, your drive is bad", after we messed around for 20 minutes on the phone.
Just an observation. I was uninstalling programs I don't need that came with the PC. And now everything runs slower. Go figure. Not impressed with Vista, at all. And how do we get Google to just go away...? -
Does anyone have links to these new reviews? Thanks!

I don't know that they're online, read them in the print form

Now my second U305-S5107 has had its optical drive crap out. The device manager says it cannot load the driver (error 39), which is up to date. The optical drive worked okay on Friday, out of the box. Now it is Monday evening and no go.
Man, I just downloaded 50 gigs of music to the HDD, and was starting to personalize. And I'm leaving on vacation for a week tomorrow. Crap, I'll have to return it when I get back. Circuit City gives you 14 days to return laptops. I'll take the darn thing with me anyway. If I cannot get the drive to work properly, back it goes next Monday for a full refund. And no more Toshiba for me.
I also posted this in the U305 thread. -
Re this post:
I posted an update re my U305 and this issue in the "the U300 is nice" thread. My issues may be software related.
