    Hi All,

I just came across the R835-P84 on sale at Office Max for $479 and decided to pick it up. Thus far I am enjoying the experience, but I miss the backlit keyboard that my old Sony had.

That said, I saw a Z835 in the flesh the other day, and I played with it a bit. I noticed that the keyboard layout appears nearly identical. Except it's backlit.

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with tearing either of these computers down, and, if so, if the keyboards can be replaced/interchanged. I guess I am looking for three things:

    (1) Can the keyboard on the R835 be removed? What about the Z835?
    (2) If so, does anybody have a maintenance manual for the R830/835, which explains how to remove the keyboard?
    (3) Does anybody know the part number for the Z830/835 keyboard, so I can try to order one direct from Toshiba.

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards,
    Jwhite326

    Are the plugs physically different?

Also, I have question not really related to this thread, but how is the durability of keyboard for long term use? This is my first Toshiba, and I notice the keycaps pick up finger grease like crazy, but can be easily wiped off. Do they eventually show wear and get ugly or does it stay shiny like new forever if I wipe it off every time?

my r700 has worn the matt finish off the keys with about a years use, and the spacebar squeaks a bit and feel a tad loose, apart from that its fine and never misses a keystroke or anything

i will eventually attempt to fit the keyboard off my z830 to the r700 and see, as the r830 is the same if it fits and works on the r700 it will on the r830 i would of thought :)
