Hey I am definitely going to be buying a new gaming laptop. In addition to my current Qosmio, a X505-Q893 being three years old now and struggling with a GeForce 460m GPU, I am also having some technical issues with it, like random power off's during gaming when the games are taxing the machine.
Anyway, I think it's time for a new laptop within the next month or so, particularly since I can't even get Saint's Row IV to run without freezing or just shutting off my laptop even though the game is technically within my lappy's specs.
So rather than spend all kinds of money diagnosing and fixing an aging gaming rig, I am going to buy a new one. I am looking at the new Qosmios, but I know hat traditionally Toshiba refreshes the line usually once in the late Spring/Early Summer and then later on in the Fall. So before I go and plunk down between $1K and $2K on the current gen Qosmio, which is the X75, does anyone ave an inkling of the coming Fall refresh, as I am sure there will be one. Waiting an extra month, by the way, is not a deal breaker for me. My current Q893 works good enough on most of my games and other applications AND I also have SR IV on the PS3, so I can wait if something sweet is coming soon. I am sure there will be some kind of a refresh this Fall, just not sure how big or small it will be.
Thanks!![]()

if you are absolutely bent on toshiba then wait but i doubt new models will come out soon as you said. anyways i dont think even then they will fix the glaring overheating issue as the qosmio's are geared towards consumer/mainstream gaming. even though they have top notch hardware. or u can try the asus gaming brand as they are more geared towards gamers. gaming laptops are always a tradeoff.
or u can give desktops a shotbetter performance for less money.

I hear you, mEatWad, and no, I am not married to a Toshiba. My gut feeling is that the Qosmio is the best bang for the buck in budget gaming laptops, but quite honestly, as much as I loved my X505-Q893 for the first year, it has had its share of problems, and I now have issues that, to be frank, I feel would be diminishing returns to try to diagnose and have fixed in a three year old laptop with a GeForce 460m GPU and an i5 (Pre-Sandy Bridges).
I do need a lappy, though, because otherwise I have to buy two PC's, one for home and one for work...make that three, and one to game on while traveling! lol
I am starting to think, however, that perhaps the Toshiba's are not ideal for me, and you may be right about one of the Asus models. Hell, maybe even MSI or Sager Clevo. They are a little harder to configure for a budget gaming rig, and will probably come out a few dollars more for comparable specs to one of the pre-built Qosmios, but they, too, are worth looking into as I am finding out.
My biggest pet peeve at the moment is that fact that it is near impossible to get a current gaming rig with Windows 7. I mean, look, I get why at the under $2K price range these companies are not including a touch screen, But I use my computer for a ton of stuff, not just gaming, and Windows 8 with a laptop mousepad is a nightmare! And I am certainly not willing to buy a laptop with Win 8 installed (and built into the price, of course!) and then have to go out and purchase Windows 7 for the non touch screen! On the other hand, there is a company called CyberPower that makes a line called FangBook that has several tiers comparable in price and features to Toshiba, Asus, MSI, etc. They also offer one model with Windows 7, so I am looking into them as well. -
i hear you. never had a desktop myself. just a suggestion.
i personally never liked boutique pc makers like MSi, Sager. just always went for name brand.
Go for the x70 then man, except for overheating its top notch. someone even mentioned that their macbook pro's run into 100 c quite easily.
other then that its surprisingly light weight, can move it around with one hand. very fast obviously, booted up in a few seconds with the stock 5400rpm drive. and from the win 8 start tile screen just click a button and u r on the desktop mode with all the features. i think thats a toshiba utility, not sure. -
Yeah, it also looks to be one of the more reasonably priced of the budget gaming lappies. Not sure I like the idea of a 5400 speed HD. I would actually rather have the 7200 with 750 GB instead of the 1TB 5400, which I believe on most of buildable models are interchangeable with no financial expense. My big issue right now is Windows 8.
I know this sounds crappy, but I can't imagine navigating Windows 8 without touch screen. I know there are various start menu programs, but seriously, what the hell are these companies thinking marrying Win 8 to a non touch screen? At least offer Windows 7! lol
Anyway, I won't let that be a deal breaker (though CyberPC makes a competitively priced FangBook gaming laptop and you can get it with Windows 7 64bit Home Premium for the same price as Windows 8. Heating isn't a huge issue since, as you say, they are made to run hot. What's the big difference then between the X70 and the X75? The only thing I can see is that the X75 uses Haswell and the X70 doesn't? But, yeah, I am going to sit on my hands just for another few weeks to see if ANYTHING new comes out of the Toshba line. Historically, every Fall, right around this time, Toshiba offers some form of refresh. three years ago it was huge! They literally went from using the GeForce 360m in their Qosmio X505 line to using the 460m. I would NOT have wanted to be the one who bought the X505 with the 360m a week or two before that refresh! lol
Seriously, while I am quite sure that the refresh this Fall won't be anywhere near that big, my current laptop (X505 Q893) works mostly fine. It has a serious shutdown problem when running on batteries and when trying to run high end games that it should be able to run just fine at lower resolutions and lower details while plugged in, but it is working well enough that I can hold out just a few weeks to see if anything worthwhile new comes down the pike.
Maybe a Windows 7 option? Perhaps 3D capabilities on the built in monitor?
One thing I like about the boutique PC's you mentioned is that a few of them you can get with an anti-glare matte screen for not much money at all. The glare on my machine KILLS ME sometimes! -
Hmmm Okay, it is September 20th, so a Qosmio refresh of some sort should be coming soon, if at all. Even if it's something minor, I want to see what they come up with: 3D? Touch screen (doubt it) or some type of hardware bump? My present Qosmio works, though is limping along at about 80-90% efficiency, so I can afford to wait a few weeks to see if anything is coming.
Refresh Of Qosmio Line?
