When the screen is black/dark, look very closely to see whether you can see any images or not. Also, plug an external monitor to your laptop to verify whether you get an image of your desktop or not.

If you are able to get an image, or are able to see a faint image on the laptop screen, then most likely your backlighting/inverter is out.
