i'll make this quick and to the point. Toshiba Satellite 1135-S125

One year ago my laptop crashed. Died.

A "computer guy" copied my hard drive. he might have wiped it, not sure though. i do not think he disassembled the laptop case.

the other day i dig this laptop out of the closet to fix it. i push the start button and a black screen with white letters comes on. The white letter message keeps repeating itself and won't progress any farther.

a day later i took all the screws out in an attemp to disassemble the laptop. i was unsuccessful, i did not get the rear cover off.

now when i push the power button, the lights come on and i hear a fan come on, but nothing on the monitor. i don't think i hear a hard drive, but i'm not sure.

i would like to fix this laptop for cheap, i don't really care too much about it, it would just be nice to have a portable computer again for cheap. please help. i'm a beginner when it comes to computer internals, but i do know some stuff.

What did the white letter message say?
Did you touch anything on the HDD(or any other internal part of your system) without grounding yourself first?
    Can you get into BIOS?

i don't remember what it said.

i touched the RAM with my fingers.

nope, can't get into bios. i even tried hooking up an external monitor using the output ports on the back of the laptop, but nothing on that screen either.

    update:

i left it unplugged and the battery out of it for a while, turned it on and that black screen with white letters is on there.

    Here's exactly what it says:

    Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
    Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet COntroller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

Hmm I'm no expert at errors such as these but do you have another mobo or atleast another set of RAM you can put in.
You may have fried the mobo or the RAM with the static from your hands..

no i don't have any other laptop parts i can use for it.

i don't think i would have fried it with static because it did the same thing before my "disassemble" as it does now. not sure why the screen wouldn't work at all there for a while.

Check on ebay, maybe you can find another laptop like the one you have broken for cheap and you can just open that one to see how is everything and maybe swap some parts that are serviceable...

    good idea.

i found an identical one on ebay for about $110. But i'd like to repair this thing for cheaper than that if possible.

Well, if you can't get in to BIOS then it's time to get a new one. What have you been using?

do you have any idea why it won't get into BIOS?

i've been using a decently build desktop that my buddy built. dual 250G RAID hard drives, 2G Ram, SLI 7600GT's video cards, AMD, ASUS mb, dual 19" widescreen monitors. its decent. time to upgrade that again too.

Sounds like the guy who copied your HDD touched it with static.
But, if you can't get into BIOS(the Toshiba screen) then well......
Do you see the Toshiba Screen?
EDIT: since you've gotten into BIOS I'm positive its the HDD.

it seems like if i leave the computer unpowered for a while, it works, but if i try mulitple attempts at one time, every attempt is just a blank screen.

yes, when it does work, i do see the Toshiba logo screen. it gives me two options, F2 and i think F12 (can't remember). i got into BIOS, then BIOS froze up after a while.

Is your CPU's heat sink fitted correctly.
I know you said you tried but, if you want to use this computer you have to find a way.

also, once i install a new hard drive, whats the next step? i'll have to install Windows and all that again right? i may have all of the old info from the old hard drive. i transfered it from the computer guy's external hard drive.
