I bought a 256mb stick of RAM to upgrade my fathers laptop from dabs.com, and after I'd fitted it, the laptop wouldn't post. I figured it was either bad memory or incompatible, so I returned it and asked for a refund.
However, they ignored that and just sent me a replacement, so I'm presuming that they tested it and found it faulty. I just want to check that the memory is compatible before I open the packaging this time, as if it's not, I'll still have some hope of returning it.
The memory is Kingston Value 144 Pin SODIMM PC100 Non Parity CL2
I don't know what non-parity or CL2 mean, so any comments would be greatly appreciated.

In theory it should work as its the correct speed, but the laptop uses CL2.5 most likely and its possible that the kingston DIMM you got has its SPD programmed to only have timmings for CL2 and not CL2.5 which would cause the memory/computer to freak out because they both want to run at different speeds.

Thanks Max - if this is the case, can I not change timings in the BIOS somewhere?

Very unlikely for a laptop that old. I'd find out what the chip you're already running is (CL, density etc.) and get one with exactly the same spec.
