Suddenly my Toshiba will not read or write DVDs (or CDs). The lights come on, the noises give the appearance that the drive is trying to read the DVD, but then nothing. The light on the DVD player says on. The drive shows up in windows explorer. When you double click on it, it open a new window (does not ask you to enter a disk). The window is empty - no files are listed. Autorun does not occur.

So I take it in for repair. All the drivers are checked and appear to be fine. The repair man (a misnomer) declares the drive dead and states that a new one is needed - no repair possible. I try 3 different shops with the same result. I am in Brasil. The price quoted for replacement is consistent at R$480 (almost USD$300). R$280 for the drive and $200 for labor and a guarantee (they all emphasize).

I decide it is better to buy an external drive in the states and have someone bring it down for me. Today, I installed the new DVD super-multi. Guess what - same result!!! The install went smooth. The drivers are in place. But when you put a DVD (or CD) in the drive, the results are quite similar to the old internal drive. The light flashes, the drive hums a little, and then nothing. When you try to access the drive in windows explorer, you get the message to insert a disc.

Coincidence??? I am wondering if something else is wrong with my laptop rather than the DVD player. Does any of this sound familiar to any of you? Any/all help would be greatly appreciated. :D thanks

Occasionally it will be a Windows issue and running your restore CD's will correct the problem. I've also seen where it will give you and error in device manager and if you Google around there is an upper and lower filter thing you can try and it may also correct the issue. Would run retore as a last resort once your data is backed up.
By the way $200 for labor is insane. Replacing the CD/DVD drive is a 5 minute process at most.
