    Hi

I am new to this forum and wish I would have known about it before updating my hdd. I am hoping that it is not too late to ask for advice.

I had a 40 GB harddrive which Systems Event said was about to fail. I could not find a hdd for the Satellite A20 on the Toshiba website. A computer shop that I use advised me to buy a Samsung 160 GB drive - model HM160HC which I put in and everything seems to be okay (as in recognized). I have three partitions of 40 GB, 40 GB and the balance of 70 GB+ on the third partition.

I have the following problems and was wondering if a bios update would help.
The bios version that I have is 1.1 and and the latest is 1.4. Nowhere could I find what the bios updates solved.

Norton Ghost 12 custom disk hangs in the Recovery Environment. ( I am not too concerned as Shadow Protect works and so I can have backup support)

It takes quite a while to boot - a little over 3 minutes with just two programs in msconfig.

It takes one minute to open Open Office Writer the first time it is opened - after that it is a matter of seconds.

It takes 20 seconds to open the home page the first time it is opened. After that it is a matter of seconds.

"My Computer" and Outlook Express, on the other hand open immediately from the first time. Shutting down the computer goes quickly.

What kind of risks am I taking if I update the bios ? Is there a way of getting the old bios back if things are worse with the update ? Can an update cause the computer to not recognize the new hdd that I put in ?

I am very nervous about doing this and would really appreciate your advice before I do something that could turn out to be a terrible mistake.

    Thanks!

    Vivienne
