I've been doing some searching through the forums here, but can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. So I thought I would post to see if any of the laptop Guru's on here have the answer I'm looking for.

Toshiba seems to have left out any info on CPU compatibility for this model (A45-S120) on their website. So I did some research which eventually led me to Intel's site. Where I found that the Mobile 852GME chipset this laptop has, is compatible with a 2Ghz mobile P4 (model SL6FK)
Via this page Intel® Pentium® Mobile Processor with Mobile Intel® 852GME Chipset

The P4 is a slower clock speed than the 2.6Ghz celeron it came with (model SL7D6), but has more L2 cache so I figured it would be a slight improvement (maybe). Anyway, i bought the CPU and installed it. After upgrading my BIOS to the newest version, and resetting the CMOS settings of course. But it won't post with the P4 in it. It will power on and then just sit there with no display. No error beeps or anything, it just stays on a blank screen.

    So I guess my question is this;
Is this CPU compatible with my laptop. Or better yet are there any other processors that are compatible with this laptop, aside from a different celeron of course.

Thanks for reading my post, and I greatly appreciate any help. If you need any other info please feel free to ask me.

    Thanks, Carey

    Thanks for the reply jOKER

    The CPU I bought was a mobile version (model SL6FK)= Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - M 2.00 GHz, 512K Cache, 400 MHz FSB with SPEC Code(s) SL6CL, SL6DF, SL6FK, SL6V9

By all rights it should work, but due to the lack on info on this laptops upgradability. I'm beginning to think it was never intended to use anything other than the shotty 2.6 celeron it came with.

Another possibility that just occured to me; The celeron it came with (model SL7D6) does not appear to even be a mobile processor. Although intel has no info on it, everything else I see that refers to it says nothing about it being a mobile chip. Perhaps toshiba used desktop architecture for the mobo in this laptop. Although the socket is marked as a mPGA478B so who knows.

    Thanks again for the reply.

By all rights the CPU you posted should work, but that's the same one I bought that doesn't seem to work. It's too bad toshiba doesn't just have a CPU compatibility list it can be referenced from. Then again, if they give you all the info you need to upgrade your existing laptop. You wouldn't need to eventually buy a new one from them.

Anyway, I've gotten a little more information by doing some research on the motherboard this laptop uses.
Here; Toshiba Satellite A45 MotherBoard P000392610

By cross referencing it with other laptop models this motherboard goes into, I've found it's also used in a Satellite Pro A40-902. Which comes with a 2.8Ghz celeron, and is apparently capable of taking up to a 2.8Ghz P4. According to this link; Toshiba A45 Satellite P4 2.8Ghz Laptop Motherboard S130 - ZKarlo

I'm not sure how accurate this info is, but I'll keep doing some searching and see if I can verify it. So far from what I can see on toshiba's site, they don't have any support at all for the satellite pro a40 models. Or at least I'm not seeing them in their list.

Thanks again for the response, and I'll let you know what I find.

I can now confirm that this laptop will work with a 2.8Ghz Mobile P4 with a 533 FSB (Model SL7N8)

I imagine other models that match the same specs will work as well, but I can confirm 100% that this particular model will work.

Thanks again for trying to lend a hand tHE jOKER, even though your posts kind of just repeated what I had already said. It got me thinking of other ways to find what I was looking for, lol

Hopefully this info will be useful to someone else looking to upgrade this god forsaken laptop. Good Luck!
