So I was considering getting a Toshiba Satellite A70-RX1 until I heard about the problems with it freezing. This laptop has everything I want (3.06ghz, 80gb hard drive, nice size screen, burner) but I don't really want to deal with the static problems and having to get it repaired. So I was wondering, should I just go ahead and get this one, or do you know of any other similer laptops in the same-ish price range (around $1599 cdn).

    Moohoo,

I wouldn't recommend the A70, it's too problematic. The Toshiba's in general have been a bit on the lower end of the build quality for the last little while. You may want to consider alternative brands.

The HP/Compaq brand is decent in build quality. You may want to consider the HP DV1000 (14" wide screen) or DV4000 series (15.4" wide screen). The Compaq R4000 or V2000 series is the ompaq version of the HP DV series. Futureshop/Best Buy usually has them on sale so it should be in your price range. They have the Pentium M CPU which is better than the P4's in many aspects. Mainly in battery conservation.
