My wife had her Toshiba sitting on her lap at an angle and accidentally dropped a small baby monitor which hit the screen. The drop cracked something within the LCD and it now needs to be repaired.
Both Toshiba and a local authorized place want $400 - $500 to fix it.
Bought it new two months ago for $380 so I can't see spending that much to fix it.
Is there a cheaper alternative to replacing the LCD other than DIY? The part seems to range from $70 to $180 online.
Thanks.

The only other thing (than DIY replacement or having Toshiba fix it) will be to hook up an external monitor (VGA or HDMI port) to the laptop.
You'll be less mobile, but it will be a heck of a lot cheaper than sending it in to be fixed.
Good luck. -
Screencountry.com has excellent prices, I have used them several times for problematic screens on Lenovo T60's at work as well as some personal laptop repairs for friends. They do not list your exact model, but a C655-S5056 model with 4 replacement options (depending on screen type and backlight) for as little as $63 new.
If you are not comfortable changing your own screen perhaps you can ask a friend who has done this type of thing before. It is not too hard, mostly pay attention to removing the front bezel so that you do not break the retention clips. -
In case you choose to do it yourself here is a manual:

Hope this is for your model.
Good Luck
