Hi everyone, my first post!!! :)

I have almost succeeded in setting up a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983 with Windows XP, however I cannot seem to locate a Windows XP driver for the ATI Mobility Radeon 4100 video that this laptop has...

Googling "laptops with ATI Mobility Radeon 4100" has turned up nothing useful, and Toshiba doesn't have the video driver for XP up on their website (at least for this specific model...). AMD/ATI don't want to give out the driver for this specific video hardware, either (the typical "we can't control the features that manufacturers choose to implement..." yadda yadda yadda...).

Before anyone asks, it is a business system, for use on our company's network, and I don't want to force Windows 7 on anyone (yet).

Toshiba should have it on their website. If it is not there you may have to download the latest desktop driver from AMD's website, and then use Mobility Modder to convert it to a notebook driver.

Okay, so I did that, and the video driver included with the nice package didn't work. Even though the video in my Toshiba is a Radeon Mobility 4100, I loaded the driver by hand and told it my video adapter is an ATI Radeon Mobility 4200. So far, everything seems to be working well...

I thought it was the 4200...

    So it's working alright?

The specific model is Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983, which is a "downgraded" model for US big-box retailers to put on sale for $359 US... :D The video is indeed a Radeon Mobility 4100 (which is just a downclocked Radeon Mobility 4200). I booted the system in Win 7 before reformatting the drive, and did a print screen capture of the device manager with all the important items opened before putting XP on the system.

So far, everything is working OK, the system was up on my desk all weekend with no blue screens, and the video looks nice and sharp!

Unpack the cool little .rar file from the Toshiba thread that I linked (the one you have to download...). Then run the video.exe file within....

An ATI setup will start, but fail because it cannot find the "appropriate" hardware. However, it did extract the .inf file you need to manually load a driver (into C:\ATI\Support\9-9_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Driver\XP_INF).

So, go to the Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager, and right click on the video adapter with the yellow bang, and select "Update Driver..." When the Hardware Update Wizard appears, click the "Install from a specific location (Advanced)" radio button, and click next. On the next screen of the wizard, select the "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." radio button, and click next. On the next screen, uncheck the "Show Compatible hardware" checkbox, and then Click "Have Disk..." When asked where the INF file lives on the next screen, browse to c:\ATI\Support\9-9_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Driver\XP_INF and select the INF file in the directory. Then tell it to use the ATI Radeon Mobility 4200 driver, and ignore the dire warnings from windows. Voila! Working XP video...
