I am experiencing many 40g Toshiba H/D failures in Satellite Pro 6100's. We have 6 of these at the company I work for and have lost 4 drives in the past 3 months. I realize that this model runs hot but the only probelms we are having is in the H/D. If you touch the end of the H/D it is so hot you can not leave your finger on it. I experience this on all of the 6100's we have.
I did modify the drive door on my 6100 by drilling a series of holes in it after I saw a auction on eBay that the seller had done the same mod on his and he did not lose any more H/D's after making the mod and adding a small fan. I do not see where to add a fan! But this unit does run cooler by 1 or 2 degrees with the holes in the cover. If any one knows of such a fan let me know.

Is anybody else having these problems? If so do you know a fix?

I don't know about the fan thing, though. I wouldn't do that because your system could malfunction, seriously. the HDD's shouldn't be getting so hot that are "dying". There might be a problem with the HDD's; maby a bad "batch".

I have an old Toshiba Sat Pro 4320 (CDN Model) and I've upgraded the HDD to a 5400RPM drive. I've had instances where I riun the unit for a week straight 24x7 and my drive only gets warm. Most notebooks have their HDD's encased inside the unit (under a cover or something) so ventilation should not be the problem. If you HDD is overheating like this, it could be related to the systemboard or HDD controller. If it's feeding too much power to the HDD, that could lead to the HDD failing and frying like it has. You may even want to try getting the notebook serviced (systemboard & HDD controller if seperate) and see if this resolves the problem rather than drilling holes into your unit.
