According to Wikipedia the Celeron 530 M is a socket M processor. The Celeron 530 (no M) is a socket P. Socket M is an older mobile cpu platform, but there should be quite a few options out there better than a celeron. Use CPU-Z to get an affirmative answer about your CPU, maybe even open it up to get the spec # (ex. SLa4e).

I thinks it's socket P because of the chipset that it has.

Did you get the latest BIOS from the toshiba site:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

    Maybe this thread can help:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=223987&highlight=GL960

I don't really know if the C2D CPUs would work, if they do then you could possibly upgrade to a T7700, T7500, T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500.

But I don't know. Maybe if you could borrow a socket P C2D to test before you buy.

    Hi!

Thanks for all your replies. CPU-Z Specs are:-

    Name:- Intel Celeron M 530
    Code Name:- Conroe-L
    Package:- Socket 479 mPGA
    Technology:- 65mn
    Chipset:- Intel GL960 Rev C0

I actually downloaded the lastest bios from the Toshiba website for win xp which was version 5.5 but winflash just wouldn't load. When i first got the laptop it had Vista installed. My bios version is 1.6 and i think the version for vista on the Toshiba site is V2.0. So will i have to put vista back on to put V2.0 on.

    Thanks

Winflash is a programme that's part of the download for the bios so that you can flash the bios from windows.

My toshiba bios came as an exe file.
So all I had to do was double click on it.

Do you have a toshiba BIOS, or is it something like phoenix?

My bios is AMI. I think the only exe file with the bios download is winflash.

    Thanks

So which cpu's would work. The reason i asking is that i upgraded an acer a few months ago after reading loads of threads and it still took me three goes before i got the right cpu, i don't really want to make that mistake again if possible.

    Thanks

    According to this (intel):
    http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=26558

Your chipset supports the Celeron 550, 560 and 570.

But some people have better CPUs working with that chipset:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=316889
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=212097

So there is a chance that you can upgrade to a T8100, maybe T8300 and even T9300 or T9500. But it's a risk.

I cannot be sure. It's up to you. Because intel says that your chipset only supports a 533mhz FSB, but people have 800mhz FSB cpus working fine.

If it was me I would try a T8300, but it's a risk, so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

I can tell you which socket.

Please tell me what it says on your CPU?

    If it says:
    SL9VA

    Then it is socket M.

    If it says:
    SLA2G

    Then it is socket P.

    Sorry for late reply.

I have managed to update the bios and i have got a t2050 cpu so once i have tried it i can find out the model no for the celeron.

    Thanks

Just pulled the laptop apart and it is a SLA2G cpu.

    Update:-

    Just put in a Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.4Ghz, 4mb cache 800MHz
So far everthing going well. I've also purchashed an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5450 (2M Cache, 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB). Would this be just a good an upgrade considering the t7700 won't run at full speed.

    Thanks

What speed is the T7700 running?

    Use CPUz to check.

BTW, are you going to sell your old Celeron? I might be interesting in it.

    This is what cpu-z said

    Core Speed:- 1596.1 MHz
    Multiplier:- X8
    Bus Speed:-199.51 MHz
    Rated FSB:- 798.02 MHz

    Cache:-
    L1 Data:-2x32 kbytes 8-way
    L1 inst:- 2x32 kbytes 8-way
    Level:-2 4096kbytes 16-way

As for the celeron cpu i'll probably keep hold of it just incase.

    Thanks

It looks like the T7700 is running at the full 800mhz FSB. Means you've got a great upgrade there. just to make sure, run ORTHOS or another program to stress the CPU and watch to see if it runs at it's max multi.

Also, if you havn't already done so, follow this guide:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824

Those T7*** CPUs undervolt well, you will see a large temp drop. I went down 12C by undervolting my T7300.
