Just wondering what people think of the Satellite Pro models? What is the build quality like?

I am thinking of getting a Satellite Pro A100 but just wondered about the quality as I have never seen/used a Toshiba laptop in my life.

I will mainly be using the laptop for development in .NET and SQL. I will also be heavily using vmware workstation on this system. One concern I have is that the review on this site says the keyboard is "Squishy". ( link to review)

Most laptop keyboards have some kind of flex but some are worse then others.

Please fill out the FAQ so we can help you.

    1) What is your budget?

I would like around £1000 but can go up to £1500.

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?

15.4" is maximum, 13-14" would be perfect if I could find one with the components I want!

    3) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in.

    England :)

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

I have no brand loyalty. I have seen decent brands break (such as IBM/Lenovo) and cheap brands last 5+ years without one problem.

    5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?

Development in C# (and other .NET components). I will also be making heavy use of VMware Workstation.
As well as general tasks such as web, email, etc.

Gaming is not required however I require a semi-decent GPU for some of the new graphics capabilities in Vista which I
will most likely utilise in the near future. Not top of the range but something with dedicated memory is a must.

    6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?

95% on my desk, 5% on the move. It sounds crazy I know but it is a secondary system. It is a mobile dev/demo system as such.

    7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?

Nope. But I want a GPU that will handle Aero on Vista with ease.

    8) How many hours of battery life do you need?

Not hugely important, 2+ would be nice but with what I will be using the laptop for the load will be high so I don't expect the battery to last long!

    9) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?

Nope however I would like to go to a store to have a play in person and then buy online (cheaper!) if possible :)

    10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?

    widescreen only

    11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

1280x800 or 1440x900. I have floaters in my eyes and high resolutions give me awful headaches.

    12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?

non glossy because of my eyes.

    13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

if i can get the spec i want and it look pretty thats great, otherwise its the spec over the looks sorry.

    14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?

    at least 3 years.

    15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 200GB?

i want a 7200RPM HDD so I think 80-100 GB is going to be my best bet.

    16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?

    DVD +/- RW

    17) Anything else?

MUST HAVE a Core 2 Duo T7200 CPU or higher. This is required for the 4MB L2 Cache for development.
2GB DDR2 PC5300 RAM. I dont mind upgrading this myself.
As many USB ports as possible.
Solid keyboard that is comfortable to type (code) on for hours and hours
DVI would be nice but not a deal breaker.

I was thinking of getting a MacBook Pro however the price is very high (although the spec very good, except the graphics card) however I do not think the added power is worth the cost. However the build quality is excellent. The resolution is a bit higher than I wanted but I can live with it I think.

The Lenovo laptops seems great but are expensive and I cant seem to find one to the spec I want sadly.

HP or Dell business notebooks. I find the HP keyboards on their business range great to type on, definitely one of the best around.

My only problem with HP is that I cannot customize the notebook like I can on Dell's website.
