Satellite R830/R835 serious flaws (besides phantom Sata3, the fail of USB3. What's next?)

I got this notebook just few days ago. I knew i was buying a notebook with a malfunctioning SATA 3 controller, i though it was not a big deal since i planned to install a SATA 2 SSD (samsung 470 more affordable for my wallet).

What really disappoint me is the USB 3.0 serious malfunctioning, mostly because i didn't see it coming. I didn't know about this problem because it seems not many people experience it or maybe because not many people talk about it.

So, in order to prevent other people to get a very unpleasant surprise, here i am and maybe other disappointed R830/835 customers would join me in this thread talking about their own experience of this notebook problems, particularly the serious ones. We can't let Toshiba get away with it without even say anything.

The problem in short: no matter what OS you are using, from several linux distro, through Win 7 32 bits and 64 bits and even a try with Win 8 developer preview, not even matter what filesystem usb key is formatted with, when i try to copy some data from or to a usb key plugged into the usb 3.0 port, the process stop within a couple of minutes and the usb 3.0 controller seems to be dead, completely off, no more communication with any usb device you would plug in. The usb 3.0 works again after a reboot but you can't use it unless for very little data transfer, i never managed to copy huge amount of data, and in some occasion i even got a couple of BSOD before windows managed to complete the reboot process and a couple of kernel panic during the copy of data on linux.

How many of you have experienced this problem?

It would be interesting to draw up a statistics. Pure curiosity, on amazon comments i read about a guy who changed two R835 and in the end he got refunded because the notebooks were both affected by this problem. I read of some other people complaining here and here on Toshiba support forum and they got no solution.

To be honest i'm also disappointed about bluetooth. I have a logitech 555b bluetooth mouse and while the notebook is just a bit under stress, lets say cpu at 40%-50% and downloading something connected via wireless network, i experience delays in mouse movements. I've seen worst behavior than this in the past, but when bluetooth was just born, i didn't expect to see this kind of behavior today, even if it is just a bit perceptible.

Also, the wireless signal is not that good too. In the room next to the one i placed the router i get 75% of signal, even my cellphone get a better signal so close to the router. Besides, compared to an asus U30SD, i get 4-5 MB/s with the toshiba vs 8-9 MB/s with the asus when i try some files transfer.

Since i got it for 750 euro (something like 1000 USD) i would have bore the minor flaws even including the SATA 3 not working properly, but all these problems together seem a little too much to bear and make me regret my purchase even if i do like very much the concept (very light, quite thin, long battery life, fairly priced) of this notebook.

Finally i apologize for my english, it's not my mother tongue and i'm sure i would seem like a cave man for how many mistakes i've done.

I have a r835-p56x and have used it with multiple WD 1TB Passport USB 3.0 drives and never had any problems. Can't speak to the weak wifi since i replaced it with an intel 6250 wimax as soon as i got the laptop and it seems to be working fine

Since i swapped the hdd for a samsung ssd i had to do a fresh win 7 64bit install and just installed the drivers from the Toshiba support site. Sorry that you are having so many troubles

I quite envy you because i like this notebook, so light and still a notebook! But i can't stand not having USB 3.0.
I can't count how many fresh start i've done in the last fre days, it seemed the usb 3.0 problem was kinda like degenerative, i mean i tried to install one driver by another to see what was triggering the problem and it ended like it shows up even just installing the usb 3.0 driver alone (even the most updated version 2.1.25). I even tried to switch the usb sleep/charge function on mode1/on mode 2/off , but nothing changed.

Tomorrow i'll ask the replacement of the notebook hoping i had just bad luck, but after i read about the guy who changed 2 notebook having the same problems both the time i kinda feel discouraged.

    Update.

I got a new laptop from Toshiba today.

Surprise surprise... it has the same problem, maybe even a bit worse, i mean the port go to sleep even faster than the previous model. I insert my Kingston datatraverler 150 32GB just start a trasnfer of a near 2GB file and after a few the transfer stops and USB 3.0 port become unavailable. With my LaCie 1TB 3.5" usb 2.0 external hard drive it's even worse. I plug in the usb cable and the autoplay start to check the folders in my hard disk, just a few seconds and it stucks itself before even finish the check and usb 3 port is dead. The same with a brand new A-Data s102 USB 3 pen drive. So it's not just the old usb 2 devices.

    2 notebooks R830 2 fail. Lets see what's next.

    That's some serious bad luck.

As for the SATA-III, it is not malfunctioning, it has been disabled. "Jim" over at Official Toshiba Forums [and a Toshiba Employee] has stated the engineers "may" enable the SATA-III feature in the future with a BIOS update [however, I personally seriously doubt this].
    R835 - Limited to SATA II Transfer Rate (3 Gb/s) -... - Toshiba Forums

BUT for the USB 3.0 problem, that sounds like a serious problem. I know you have already been through the support hoops, but I would keep bugging Toshiba Support until you get a functional laptop.

Thanks for keeping us posted and make sure to update us with any results.
    Good luck

USB 3.0 problem appeared on my Satellite R830 after a month of everyday use. Controller started to power itself off not only on heavy file transfers, but sometimes even with simple USB mouse connected to it. Problem existed on both OSes which I have installed on my SSD: 32-bit WinXP Pro with latest driver from Toshiba's website ver. 2.0.34.1 and 64-bit FC16 Linux with 3.1.2 kernel (i've swapped stock HDD to Intel 320 SSD and said goodbye to Win7).

After a small research it seems that this is not Toshiba's problem, but a bug in old firmware of Renesas uPD720200 USB 3.0 controllers. It is described here for example. I've installed latest Renesas firmware (4.0.1.5) and latest Windows driver (2.1.28.0) found here, and it helped. I think problem has completely vanished now on all OSes, so solution was in firmware update, not in driver.
