I'm just tackling a problem where sometimes, when my Satellite U300 is woken from Sleep (Vista) it will reboot instead and then try to recover from an 'Abnormal Shutdown'.
I've found another owner who like me sometimes gets this crash. Other times, it will wake normally.
This is a brand new laptop and I'd love a little poll re how many Satellite U300 owners are suffering this fault?
-
I'm sorry I can't help you with this, but maybe you could answer me a question........Does your touchpad let you scroll up and down web pages without holding the button?
I assumed it did, but when I was in the store, I couldn't get it to work. -
No, from my limited experience of the touchpad, I've not found how to scroll webpages with it. Am using a wireless mouse normally as touchpads & buttons are frustrating on most laptops.
Meanwhile, any Satellite U300 owners with problems upon waking from Sleep, please post! I've noticed that Toshiba's 'latest' Intel Chipset driver is 7 months older than Intel's latest. Are we all running with out of date drivers? Not good with Vista as buggy as it is. -
It's you're wireless/usb mouse. Before you put it to sleep, pull out the receiver and wait a few seconds for vista to recognize that it is removed.
-
Cloud_nine - how sure are you that it's the wireless mouse? Is there anything diagnostic I can do to confirm that?
Just wondering, as so many factors are under question here? -
I have a U305-S7446 suffering the exact same problem. I don't use an external mouse and vista bluescreens when returning from sleep (after reopening the laptop). Unfortunately, I have no solution as of yet.
-
Well it's nice to find a third owner with the same problem! This strengthens my belief that the laptop's fine, and this is something to do with software/hardware configuration. The contenders at present are:
a) Wireless mouse - but your post suggests this isn't to blame
b) Graphics Chipset driver - Toshiba's latest offering is not Intel's latest (by 7 months) but loading Intel's is an unknown risk. Release notes for Intel's few other updates do refer to fixing blue screen and other serious problems, however.
c) Vista - known to be buggy with Sleep and improvements in this area due in SP1 (due Mar'08?). I've also been told that there might be fixes downloadable from MS which are not automatically collected my MS Update, but have yet to find out if that's true.
Any more info or votes for Rebooting U300's, please post! -
I have noticed that it doesn't always blue screen after waking from sleep but I can't tell what's triggering it exactly. Sometimes the blue screen message is different than others. I have seen it say there's a problem with kb.sys and other times I see a general page fault problem.
I haven't tried the Vista SP1 RC yet but it might fix the problem.
RC can be found at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb738089.aspx if you want to give it a try.
edit: I also found that others are having this problem http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2616503&SiteID=17 -
That last post is my own(!) but I have been contacted by one other person claiming an 'identical' problem. I didn't realise that SP1 was officially out as a RC version. The hotfix re USB devices not waking from sleep properly is interesting, but if you're not using a USB mouse, that may not help you?
My problem likewise won't happen on demand, making attempts to cure it hard. I only once saw an actual error message first, a blue screen with a whole page of verbage which sadly vanished too quickly to read, but it looked like some complaint re memory from my brief glance at it. All the other times, it just self-rebooted and later churned out some cryptic error codes which presumably help no-one other that MS.
I do suspect that Vista and/or Graphics driver updates will eventually remove this problem, but meanwhile it's hard to fathom without help from those who know. Toshiba's offshore call centre seemed to immediately know what the problem was when I described it, but sadly just expected their Tempo update bloatware to cure it outright. I might try them again, but these people tend to read from scripts and may not always divulge known problems. -
I just tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941600 this update, closed and opened my laptop 10 times and on the 10th time it blue screened again. The error message this time was invalid_work_queue_item 0x00000096.
-
I was just browsing MS's updates my self. I hadn't spotted kb941600, but reading the list of fixes, I would have loaded it too, it looks ideal.
But has this messed up your laptop? Suppose you can always use System Restore to get back to where you were? -
it hasn't messed up anything and unfortunately from what i can find this seems to be a problem with vista that has yet been unresolved.
-
Well it's quite possible Vista haven't fixed sleep yet, they do list 'improvements' in the forthcoming SP1 for sleep.
That just leaves Intels Graphics chipset driver:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...32-bit+version&lang=eng&strOSs=153&submit=Go!
There seems to be some element of risk in it, Toshiba hasn't released it which would verify some kind of testing. But loads of forum responses have pointed at the need to update these. There's nothing like misbehaving graphics to really throw a PC into a spin, and mine reboots without even showing an error! -
I have been experiencing exactly the same problem with my new U300/302 model running Windows Vista Business. I received the blue screen 9 times within the first 2 weeks when waking from sleep mode. I took the laptop in for Toshiba servicing and they could not replicate the problem. Of course since getting it back I have encountered the same problem again but not as frequently so far.
Based on previous posts, it might be because I leave the wireless switch at the front of the laptop on always, when I go into and come out of sleep mode. -
İ have the same problem with U300, but the problem is within Vista(vista business without sp1). I don't have the bluescreen problem with XP Pro sp2. So i Think we have to wait microsoft to release a fix for this issue.
-
Finally found what might be the problem.
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/945577
Those who have this intermittent problem, I suggest trying this hotfix. -
By the way, yesterday i did a clean vista installation (vista without bloatware)
i installed all the vista updates, and a few software that i need. and no bluescreen after waking up from sleep.i tried it several times(sleep time is about 15 minutes) and no bluescreen, it is working. maybe it installed the above fix during the update. -
This problem is happening to me as well. I just bought my u300 a couple of weeks ago. The blue screen happens everytime I unplug the power cord from my laptop while it is sleeping. Once I open the lid to wake the laptop, the blue screen occurs. I have tried waking it first and then unpluging the cord, but this causes the system to freeze.
-
never had any problem with this model, it is very quiet and relaible.
-
Once I installed Vista SP1. All the sleep problems went away
-
go to toshibadirect and update your bios. fixed mine and it runs like a champ now
Satellite U300 - Does yours crash/reboot/Blue Screen after waking from Sleep?
